A garden of two halves...
Aug 2021
The wild hillside area is perfect for wandering with lots of mature trees and views of the water. The loveliest part for us was the walled garden which had a jaw-dropping display of meadow flowers.

Disappointing and not worth the visit
Aug 2021 • Couples
I have no doubt that the gardens were once a beautiful sight but they are poorly maintained and everything was overgrown. Where plants had been cut back they were hacked. The walled garden was no better with the planting around the walls left to flop over with the exception of one small area. The beds had been sowed with wildflower seeds to give the appearance of colour but this was very lazy attempt to portray the garden as something spectacular. As a NT member I was very disappointed and would certainly not consider paying if you are considering a visit. Very disappointing.

Wonderful welcome and a couple of pleasant hours.

This is a great place, but sat nav is advised as it’s not well sign posted. The welcome was warm & friendly. The ‘tea tent’ was closed because of C-19, but the gardens were great with a wooden house, swing & 2 wire walks at the far end on the garden. There are some invasive non-native species along the riverside, but it looks like they are being tackled. Don’t miss the walled garden at the other end of the car park - it’s a gem.

Unexpectedly Wonderful
Jul 2021
Surprisingly wonderful visit. Though not huge, it had a lot of shade, excellent on a day of over 30C. Lovely spots to stop down by the river. And the little kitchen garden was well worth a wander around, as it was a riot of wild flowers.

Varied riverside gardens
Aug 2021 • Couples
Varied gardens alongside the River Wye with walks at different levels and some adventure playground equipment at the far end. Plenty of picnic tables and benches, and some barely visible Roman ruins riverside. Walled garden on the opposite side of the car park with some wonderful wildflower beds

Nice little spot about 45mins to walk round the only negative its on there website it states there is a tea tent open but when we arrived on site we were told there is no tea tent we did not have any water with us we would have taken some if it said on there website

As a side note the two staff we met were really nice and friendly

Small garden riverside trail
Jul 2021
Delightful riverside trail by the banks of the river Wye. Lined with seating and picnic tables at the bottom by the river bank. Short 45 min circular walk, does involve some steep slopes. Toilet facilities on sight.

A pleasant walk in beautiful surroundings.

A shortish circular walk through a steep valley next to the River Wye. Beautiful scenery. The walk is not at all challenging.

Such a peaceful, tranquil place
Jun 2021
We booked in advance as advised on the website but there were very few people there. We felt we had the place to ourselves. A delightful walk round with beautiful views. Might prove difficult to anyone with mobility issues as the paths are criss-crossed with tree roots and there are a few inclines. But lots of benches to sit and admire the scenery and the river views. We also visited the walled garden which is being replanted and should be beautiful in time. Would recommend.

lovely setting
Jun 2021
Visited here with our daughter who is confined to a wheelchair. We had read prior to our trip that wheelchair access was very limited , but being as it was the closest National trust property to our home, decided to visit anyway. The lady on the gate couldn't have been more helpful, telling us where we could access with the chair but explained it would be impossible to see most of the garden.
We managed to push her to some benches that looked out over the river and my wife and I took in turns to walk the gardens. They are lovely, with great views of the river wye and surrounding countryside.
Well worth a visit for an hour or two.
