Enjoyable evening
Feb 2020
My wife and I visited to see a touring production which was only at The Royal for two days - the auditorium was around 80% full, deservedly so for a good take on a Charles Dickens story adapted for a modern audience.
The staff are always helpful and charming, and the venue is warm and nicely presented.
The downside was that on an evening of heavy rain we arrived half an hour before the curtain up time, and as we entered we had to negotiate our way past a queue of people at the newly relocated cafe bar, which has been moved recently to the front of the building.
I assume this has been done to attract a daytime coffee and cake clientele, similar to a successful cafe in the Basingstoke theatre forum, and time will tell whether The Royal can achieve success on that front.
The theatre is a very attractive venue, with a good range of shows - well worth a visit.

Lovely little venue
Dec 2019 • Family
It’s a lovely venue. Whilst it is small it packs a lot of charm and is just stunning to look at.
The seating area and cafe are decent enough although a little pricey.

The seats are more than comfortable for 2 or so hours. Although a bit of advice don’t sit in rows a-c as they’re right infront of the stage. Otherwise all the seats are good due to how small it is, the balcony/circle is pretty good.

Anyway have been here several times, for to its locality and convenience, I really like this theatre!

Excellent smaller theatre
Dec 2019 • Couples
Our first visit was a triumph!
We saw their production of Dick Whittington which was funny, fresh and a great break from Christmas shopping...
It’s not the biggest theatre, but possibly the friendliest as we were shown to our seats by a super-helpful chap who clearly loves his job plus all other staff were smiling all the time.
There’s a seating area outside and a bar / short order cafe. The prices are reasonable but the ice-cream tubs are an eye-watering £3 each.
Places like this are a treasure and we’ll deffo visit again .

It’s behind you!!! 😃

Cafe/Bar
Dec 2019 • Couples
Popped in to see what the revamp of the cafe/bar looked like and I have to say the designers did a fantastic job - it looks great! Sadly, the sophisticated architecture was not matched by the service. Mineral water presented without eventhe offer of ice which when requested seemed to be a bit of an ordeal to "go and get some", I had to return to the bar, once the difficult ice had been got to fetch the drink, thankless. We were the only people in the place among five employees who treated the place like a staff room, shouting instructions to one another from each end of the room. There was no background music, so it echoed like a wharehouse. I assumed there was no ambient music due to it possibly interfering with the productions but it miraculously came on as others arrived so I guess they just hadn't bothered. Same with the table, 2 customers and five staff but the table hadn't been cleaned - astonishing. I think they advertise this place to be open from 10.00am, hoping to generate income for the theatre but this was after work on the Friday before Christmas and we were the only two people there and it felt like we were intruding. To top it all off, Merlot in a plastic wine glass - classy. Such a shame of a glorious opportunity. If I were one of the designers, I'd weep.

Fantastic pantomime
Dec 2019 • Family
Visited today with family and 4 year old. Absolutely fantastic pantomime. Really good value for money as we attended a weekday performance but even the weekend performances are very good value.
The show had lots of audience participation which kept children and adults entertained throughout. Never been here before but will definitely be returning to see more shows and the pantomime next year.
Thank you for a great morning.

Went see a comedy show. Lovely theatre

We saw an Ed Gamble show here. The queues at the bar were not bad. A nice barman, whose name was Tony, was chatty and friendly.
The seats had plenty of leg room and the atmosphere was excellent Would definitely visit again

Super Family Pantomime
Dec 2019 • Family
Family entertainment at its best, as always. Ed Thorpe and Julian Eardley return as the stars of the show (Dick Whittington and Dame Dolly Dumpling (in fabulous costumes as ever) with Kristopher Milner as King Ray (no French accent this time). Jessie Angell, who has only recently graduated, made a really impressive panto debut as Dick’s clever feline feline. Of course the entire supporting cast were also up to the usual standard, and there was plenty of the usual yelling of “oh no he isn’t!” Arguments and singing along and getting sprayed with water. Many of The cheesy puns went over the children’s heads, as did the very slightly risqué jokes.
King Rat, Tiddles and Alice Fitzwarren came out after the show to meet the children for photos.
All in all, another fabulous family festive fun visit. Well done everyone.

Excellent Pantomime

Went with the family to see Dick Whittington. The cast were amazing. A great show for the children. I'm not a lover of Pantomimes but thoroughly enjoyed this one. Would recommend you visit.

lovely people, lovely place
Oct 2019
Theatre Royal Winchester is always worth a visit.

It's not just a lovely building - and doesn't just host a great range of productions from popular comedy through to avant-garde dance - it also now boasts a fantastic new cafe-bar. Always friendly & with a great atmosphere... starting to become a great cultural hub for the community.

My only (mild) gripe (though I know this is for health & safety reasons) is the plastic glasses. (Might I have a glass glass if I promise not to see a play?)

Review from a performer
Oct 2019 • Business
The staff at Theatre Royal Winchester are so friendly and accommodating. They really do all the can to support your show and welcome you to the theatre.
There is a great water fountain, plenty of toilets and clean dressing rooms (although they are spaced over a couple floors which is a little difficult or quick changes.... but that’s a performers life isn’t it!!)
