One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250...

One of Winchester's five superb Military Museums telling the story of 250 years of campaigning for peace by The Royal Green Jackets and their former regiments, the 43rd and 52nd (The Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry), the 60th (The King's Royal Rifle Corps) and the 95th Rifles (The Rifle Brigade). An outstanding collection of uniforms, weapons, silver, paintings and medals set over two floors. The exhibition on the first floor, entitled 'With the Rifles to Waterloo', opened in 2015 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the 25 square metre model of the battle with light and sound commentary. The museum is situated in Peninsula Square, formerly the barracks and the home of the Rifle Depot.

Lots to see and laid out well. The diorama of the Battle of Waterloo is fascinating. Our ticket covered us for the year. It is only a short walk from the centre of town through the ancient West Gate. I have taken school trips there and the children enjoyed trying on uniforms and holding weapons.

We visited the museum approx 15 yrs ago and things have def changed and all for the better, didn't believe it could be anymore interesting than it had been during our first visit but the interactive light show over the diorama is great

A very informative and visual walk through the time and history of the Royal Green Jackets, a lot of thought and effort has gone into this and you see, read or notice something different with each visit. The battle of Waterloo diorama upstairs is magnificent. You can take as long as you want and have a nice coffee and cake... More

The museum is housed within what was Peninsula Barracks home to the Royal Green Jackets. I served with the regiment so may be a little biassed. Having said that this was my first visit for many years and it has undergone some serious transformations. It is easy to navigate around and has some fantastic exhibits for all ages covering all... The British Army came to recognize that those bright red tunics on its soldiers made for good targets, so it dressed its infantrymen in brown trousers and green jackets. Armed with rifles, lightly equipped, and marching at double-time, The Royal Green Jackets became the "rapid response force." Set among a cluster of military museums in the Peninsula Barracks in Winchester,... More

This museum is beautifully thought out, with the displays progressing you steadily through the history of the Green jackets. The diorama of the battle of Waterloo was particularly impressive, giving a very clear overview of the key moments of the battle. The personal stories of Victoria Cross winners also made for fascinating reading

Wifey and I made a day trip to Winchester and visited its many museums. The Military Museums are mainly clustered together so if travelling by car, limited free on-site parking is available (get a permit from one of the museum entrances). The Rifles Green Jackets Museum has a lot of interesting information with some made-safe rifles you can pick up... More
