Lovely walk.

Lovely walk along the riverside. Lots of benches to sit, leads to further walk along water meadows. Tranquil , ideal for a shorter walk.

Walking by the water
May 2021 • Couples
Never really walked the river before through the city and along to the college playing fields so was a pleasant stroll today. It’s a fast flowing section of the Itchen where you might spot a few fish along with the ducks as you pass the ruins of the Wolvesey castle. Very tranquil away from the roads. We kept walking to beyond the college playing grounds and then took the road back to the cathedral. Well worth the walk.

Found the walk by accident, Lovely walk near the weir, very well kept and peaceful. We stumbled upon the castle ruins which was a treat.

Delightful walk

On a warm sunny day a walk along the River Itchen is a delight. Very relaxing and so close to the city centre but peaceful and plenty to see at the same time. It really is an important feature of the character of this wonderful city.

Whether you have a long walk, a short stroll, or simply sit on a riverside bench to take in the views and ambience of the little river Itchen, the Wiers is a lovely place and certainly an area worth exploring when you visit Winchester.

ALONG ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREAT TROUT RIVERS
Mar 2019 • Solo
Walking by the Itchen in spring is a joy. The river ripples over stones on the river bed as it cascades under the ancient City Mill.
Keeping the river on the left I walked as it meandered down the brick built Wharf Mill, where in 1974, Richard Burton and Sophia Loren filmed scenes for the remake of Brief Encounter. There are seats along the river bank ( fenced ) and it is a tranquil location.
Although this the end of The Weirs walk, from Wharfe Mill, I have walked left or right on different occasions to the water meadows, Winchester College and St Cross, beyond to Shawford, Eastleigh and 12 miles distant, Southampton.
It is well worth a visit and often missed by visitors.

Lovely Area in Winchester
Sep 2018 • Friends
This is a lovely area in Winchester to take a pleasant walk. The river is crystal clear and if lucky you will see some fish. Its peaceful and the views you get are well worth the stroll through this area at the bottom of this City.
