The old town walls and buildings of Southampton require considerable pre-research to get a reasonable route and there is little to no explanation of the remains. However, anyone interested in the ancient and medieval beginings and history of Southampton would be fascinated and a walk of the old walls from the Bargate (the best preserved City gate in England) to the Friary Reredos at the back of God's Tower is only just over 1 mile with plenty of places to stop en route. Shame Southampton Council don't make more of it.

You can walk along and view most of the walls for free anytime - they are in open public spaces. A few sections of the walls are gated, which may be closed at certain times, but still free access otherwise. Some of the towers and buildings along the route do charge for entry, but that's optional. There are guided tours available too - but there is a lot to see just exploring the old walls and reading the useful information provided. There is a good hour's worth of exploration walking all the way along - surprisingly good.

It was almost two kilometers of stone walls, eight gates and twenty-nine towers that were built to protect the city. Currently less than half of those high walls are preserved, being a tourist attraction. Walking in the area is something that everyone visiting Southampton should do. They are located in the historic center.

The preserved part of the city walls in the middle of the city makes an interesting impression. Especially when there's a shopper next door. There is also a small plaque in connection with D-Day 6 June 1944 and you can also walk down Blue Anchor Lane from there.

There are many sections of the old town wall found throughout the city as you are exploring. Some are archways and clocks and some are large sections of the wall still intact. It is great to see that they try to keep as much of the walls as they can.

Great guided tour of Southamton City Walls today with a visit to one of five vaults in the city. Our guide Katie was brilliant and the history of this city is amazing. Lived here all my life and did not know half of it.

A huge surprise. Having visited Southampton many times, to visit friends as well as to disembark from ships, this was the first time we'd stayed overnight at the docks. The old town is fascinating, a substantial part of the town walls are still intact and the buildings around the wall area are a mix of medieval and Tudor. It's very impressive and right beside a ginormous shopping complex including Ikea. The 'new' High Street is also more interesting than the glitzy shopping centre and the closer you walk towards the old town, the nicer the street becomes.

There are bits and pieces of these very old protective walls around the old city. We found some near High Street and stopped to check them out. Some nice park area around, and then there is the shopping nearby.

On our cruise with the Aida Nova we stopped in Southampton. In typical rainy weather we looked around this beautiful old city. It's a shame we didn't see everything in the city, but we did see the most important sights.

We had a great time exploring the Southampton Town Walls. Amazingly well preserved, the Arcades section dates back to Edward III (who ruled in the 14th century. And the Southgate has historic significance. As a plaque at the site notes, it was through the gate that a part of the army of Henry V departed for France on their way to the Battle of Agincourt — in 1415! And it was from there that the Mayflower set sail for America in 1620. Lovers of history will find much to enjoy in a walk about the Southampton Town Walls.
