Walked through the town walls area of southampton to a restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed looking at the historic remains. Very interesting to see how the city would have been surrounded by the walls and plenty of plaques indicating certain areas and what they were used for.

Some older pubs and streets from 18th century maritime period still exist and worth a look too!

You can walk along and view most of the walls for free anytime - they are in open public spaces. A few sections of the walls are gated, which may be closed at certain times, but still free access otherwise. Some of the towers and buildings along the route do charge for entry, but that's optional. There are guided tours available too - but there is a lot to see just exploring the old walls and reading the useful information provided. There is a good hour's worth of exploration walking all the way along - surprisingly good.

If these walls could talk, they'd be telling millions of stories. From Norman invasions, Viking raids to floods and German bombs, they've seen everything. They've weathered the storms, ariel attacks, stood the test of time and are still proudly standing. Only if today's builders and workmen applied the same work ethic to the roadworks that they do, we will not have to see the pointless red cones and useless temporary traffic lights clogging up our roads.

Take a guided tour, you will love it. The walls have so much history, if only these walls could talk. Southampton was heavily bombed during WWII but these walls survived to bear witness of history. Loved it. You have to be fit to take the walking tours though.

Great guided tour of Southamton City Walls today with a visit to one of five vaults in the city. Our guide Katie was brilliant and the history of this city is amazing. Lived here all my life and did not know half of it.

We had a great time exploring the Southampton Town Walls. Amazingly well preserved, the Arcades section dates back to Edward III (who ruled in the 14th century. And the Southgate has historic significance. As a plaque at the site notes, it was through the gate that a part of the army of Henry V departed for France on their way to the Battle of Agincourt — in 1415! And it was from there that the Mayflower set sail for America in 1620. Lovers of history will find much to enjoy in a walk about the Southampton Town Walls.

A must for any visitor to Southampton is a walk the walls. You can start at the bottom of the High Street near the Pier or from the Bargate (the main gate of the old walls) in the centre of the High Street. Much of Southampton was bombed during WWII but much of these old medieval walls survived the blasts. The walk is well sign posted. Spend a few hours strolling around up, down the and around them; passing dungeons, watch towers with views of the docks, Tudor half timbered buildings, hole in the wall pubs. There are plenty of photo ops and places to sit, eat, drink or shop on the way and plaques reveal what each feature has been used for. There are great views of the harbour or town centre. Much of the modern town is about to undergo major construction over the next few years.

Our visit to Southampton Walls was based on the recommendation of family members who used to live in the area, we combined a morning at the Walls with an afternoon drive out to the New Forest National Park. The historic walk is a self guided tour of the old castle walls that wind their way around the streets of the modern day city. It was a very enjoyable and interesting way to explore most of the City Centre on foot, whilst reading the interpretive signs that describe the fascinating history of the area. Apart from the walls and castle ramparts, you also get to see a number of other historical sites along the way, including the Tudor house and historic chapel, one of only two chapels in Southampton which weren't leveled by the bombing in WWII.

We parked down on the waterfront near the Ikea store in one of the many multi storey carparks, the start of the walls walk is actually back in the centre of town - which initially threw us until someone told us to cut through one of the large shopping complexes and to head for the High St. The walking tour can take a good couple of hours, particularly if you take in some of more well known sites en route. While the kids may not be entranced by the history ours enjoyed exploring all the nooks and crannies of the old walls as they snake their way through the city. Certainly one of Southampton's best kept secrets and well worth a visit.

What a lovely walk to blow the cobwebs away and take in a bit of history at the same time, so much to see, how they've modernised the city and kept the heratige at the same time blends well. Plenty of old ale houses dotted around, just so you can get your second breath. Very enjoyable.

Having lived near Southampton for most of my life I only thought the walls were around the front, they are not. Although most have gone there is still evidence around the city and even better if you trace the route one or two nice pubs. Worth a look see if you need to get away from the shopping
