Lovely large common in the heart of the City. Great open spaces to play wide games and have BBQ's in the summer, as well as well built paths ideal for running. Lots of cute ponds with a variety of wildlife.

I often go there with my sister to walk her dogs and take my grandson to the play area. The whole place is just so scenic and peaceful. I feel very thankful for what we have there and realise how lucky we are in this country to have so many beautiful places like this.

When you walk through the common you can forget you are in the city. Beautiful ancient trees,a brilliant park for kids and you’ll bump into lots of lovely dogs!

I love this park!!! So many things to do there. It is just so beautiful - the lakes, the old cemetery, the trees and all that green, it just makes you feel so good being there.

I love the Common and refer to it as my extended back garden as I live within 5 minutes walk. There are opportunities to walk when it is quiet and there are times when it is (almost) crowded. There are lots of events as well as regular activities and attractions. The various ponds attract dog walkers of which there are many - learn about variations in the species ! There are play areas for children of all ages (ie including adults) and opportunities for learning the history of Southampton (the old cemetry and its occupants). The Hawthorns is an oasis for wildlife and whilst regrettably not as accessible as it used to be, provides a good learning point for small children as well as refuelling opportunity. Sometimes the music festivals and fairs contrive to change the nature of the area but these don't last long and bring revenue to the City.
