- Al S2 contributionsA relaxed and enjoyable day outFor my wife's birthday we booked on to SS Shieldhall's 66th Birthday trip from Southampton to Nab Tower and around the Solent. From the moment we arrived, the organisation of the Shieldhall team was brilliant, easily parked, guided to the ship, everything was really well organised. Once on board the ship was spotlessly clean and well presented, a real credit to the team of volunteers who look after her. The entire day was really relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable, and throughout the day, we were made to feel incredibly welcome by the entire crew, whether the staff in the shop, the engineering crew in the engine room, or the crew on the Bridge. Nothing was too much trouble and all questions were answered with an enthusiastic smile. We will definitely do another trip with Shieldhall and her crew!Visited July 2021Written July 17, 2021
- Wisewords1New Forest National Park Hampshire, United Kingdom45 contributionsSuperb day, Volunteers fantastic!Booked the Round the island Yacht race 2021- for my husband and I , was a bit unsure what to expect aside seeing the race up close with some fantastic yachts, the steamships volunteers were brilliant, they were all genuinely wanting to make the trip special, the friendliest volunteers I've ever come across and looked as though were enjoying being there and being with one another too . Captain of the ship and crew on the bridge were so informative about the race, history of the ship and the sights, landmarks along the solent . I usually zone out but today it was all just the right combination of information and intermittently! Which is a skill in itself. Safety measures in place , plenty of sanitizer stations I would definitely recommend supporting this vessel and planning a trip, be it half a day or a full day. I know we are now looking at dates and booking our next trip and bringing friends along too. God bless them all , Volunteers for having that passion ! Stay safeVisited July 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten July 3, 2021
- Nikki GHampshire, United Kingdom4 contributionsFun, educational, great experienceFantastic. We are both local but still learnt a thing or two about the area we live thanks to silky/Joanna Lumley style voice Judith , who if ever the ship was going down, she would have the ability to calm any panicked passenger to stay and listen to her. Thanks to two lovely lady volunteers (sorry don't catch their names) they advised that we could visit the steam room, John did so and thought it was brilliant, we both went to the bridge, where we met Volunteer Ray (font of all knowledge) was such a lovely chap who I could talk to forever. Volunteer Dan who turned out to work on a ship with Johns Dad back in the day and bless him he sent over some photos of Johns dad. It was a great day out but i must say mainly due to the Volunteers who were all so interesting, friendly and polite. Oh, and if you are on the ship, you must have one of their bacon rolls, all food and drink was affordable and well-priced even though they have a captured audience, they didn’t take the micky. Will go again next year to on another trip.Visited August 2022Written September 23, 2022

Loved our family visit there. Would definitely recommend it, especially to people interested/fascinated by shipping (you get to see massive cruise and cargo ships pass, some loud ship to ship communication as well), history (it's basically an interactive museum and boat tour), engineering (the engine room is an amazing visit, it's a working steam engine!). The staff/volunteers are nice and friendly, they're also happy to explain or give more details about parts of ship from the engineers in the engine room to the officers on the bridge. We also had 30s-50s singing on our trip with the Aphrodite singers, which made it a nice time-capsule.

Joined Steamship Shieldhall on her ‘American independence Day’ Cruise around the docks last weekend. I’ve been going on Shieldhall for 15 years now , each trip I always feel like an excited child on a school trip. The crew were as always extremely happy, cheerful, polite and very friendly, very helpful with solving a problem with transport I encountered.
The onboard band ‘The Stompers’ were absolutely a delight, great to see visitors having fun and dancing away to the tunes on deck, a happy party atmosphere on board. The ship looked pristine clean throughout after her recent refit at Falmouth.
Thank you once again to all the hard working crew and the ‘Stompers’, you made my day. A very happy one. Can’t wait to join you in August on the ‘Titanic themed Cruise’. You never let us down, we’ll done all 🙂🙂

Really enjoyed this, our 2nd trip, on the SS Shieldhall Steam Ship. Loads of interesting history attached to this ship. The Selsey Shantymen (9 of them) entertained us with singalong sea shanties throughout the 3.5 hour trip. A feeling of excitement and awe at the sight of the big cruise ships around us .. much hooting and waving was enjoyed. The refreshments were first class and the service extremely efficient from the bar to the kitchen to the table! An amazing CREW looked after us from the moment we boarded to the moment we disembarked. Thank you all.

A fantastic day out on a working steam ship. Crew all great and ready to answer all your questions. Great viewing point for Fasnet race. Onboard commentary superb, really informative about The Fasnet race, the boats we were seeing and on the way to the race, and on the way back lots of really good information about what you were seeing. To see the engine room and talk to the engineers was really good in particular for my grandson who wants to be an engineer.

An absolutely wonderful afternoon on the Steamship Shieldhall today. It was her first sailing, since the dreaded Covid Pandemic hit the world and it was delightful. The Captain, Crew and Pursers were all very friendly and helpful and happy to explain anything about the vessel and its past history.
I would urge anyone to take a trip on the SS Shieldhall and visit all areas, such as the Bridge and Engine Room.
An added bonus was Nigel's commentary, which was both witty and informative. Also, seeing the cruise ships leaving Southampton and the sounding of horns to acknowledge each other.
We enjoyed it so much, we may well do it all again😎👍

Wonderful, relaxing 2 hour trip around Southampton Docks seeing the cruise liners that were in port. Knowledgeable and friendly staff throughout the boat.
I live locally but still enjoy getting my bearings from the water.
Not my first time onboard, took parents for their first visit and they loved it - telling anyone who will listen all about it!

Shieldhall is a very important part of nautical history, and a trip on her is a great way to ensure that she is kept afloat. The volunteer crew are all very friendly and very knowledgeable. The open bridge and engine/boiler rooms are well worth visiting. There is also a live commentary detailing sights being passed. The cafe is well priced - bacon rolls are recommended, and the ship even has Titanic beer available. Could not be faulted.

Bought a voucher as a Birthday present, that was good idea number 1. We then chose to go out on the Shieldhall to see the Bournemouth Air show, that was good idea number 2. Great way to see the show, anchored in the perfect place. With the “typhoon” in particular it felt like we were having our own personal show as it flew over and around us, never to be forgotten. The steamship trip itself is well worth doing, we will book again. Such a friendly crew, it is worth remembering they are all volunteers. Good range of refreshments, reasonably priced and served with a smile. Enjoyed looking round too, relaxed but felt safe, not crowded.
Well done to the Shieldhall team, we had a super, fun, memorable day out 😊

Excellent music cruise with RU40 band on board. The ship is excellent with lovely friendly volunteer crew. The food in the cafe is great value - we love the bacon butties and also the quiche and salad. Very smooth sailing past several cruise ships which were in port. A really enjoyable day out!

We were aboard the Shieldhall for the 2022 Bournemouth Air Festival.
We were welcomed aboard an hour before sailing and found ourselves seats. There were plenty from which to chose. Nobody was left standing. The nice thing about them was that they were in blocks, so, you weren't squashed together.
We were treated to the tug towing us away from the berth and a "Horn Battle" when we passed the chain ferry!
We had brought a picnic but there was plenty of food and drink at a reasonable price on board.
We anchored off Bournemouth beach and had a far better view of the air show than the people on land. The Eurofighter Typhoon did a vertical climb right next to us. The noise was incredible!
The sun came out in the afternoon, so the the trip home was like a Mediterranean cruise!
It was a fabulous day out. It was the second time we had done it and we will certainly do it again.

Have a look on the Shieldhall website, this is a seasonal service, but there are some trips in early September.

Yes I think so. There is a restaurant on board with some very reasonable prices. However you can also sit on deck with a picnic. Really chilled...

Thank you for your comments, volunteering is not constrained by distance. On the trip you were on, in the crew we had one volunteer from Skye, two from Durham and one from Morecombe and several from London / Nth of the M4. Our Chairman is from Devon and we have other volunteers from the South West too. If you're interested in volunteering, and we need all sort of skills to essentially run business, not just maritime or engineering skills there's lots of information and contact details on our website.
Glad you enjoyed your trip - so did we! Definitely the best place to watch the airshow.

oops - you couldn't see which trip you were on when responding, mea culpa, however the comments are all still valid.
Hope to see you at the airshow next year if not before!!!

Hello Nigel, there are a number of places where can stay which is near the ship. The nearest is the Holiday Inn which is about a 10 minute walk to the ship.

On a Cruise last Weekend I also noticed a Wheelchair user in the Lounge/Dining area ,Enjoying Themselves as Well....There is plenty of room up front on the foredeck with Wooden Seating ,plenty of Legroom....All areas of the Ship are open such as Bridge,Upper Decks,Engine Room,Gift Shop etc ,But Steep Steps are involved to access any of these areas.....However the Crew are very Friendly ,Helpful & Accomodating and Will Willingly Help You if You ask them.
