Good Sunday Lunch
Aug 2020 • Friends
We went for Sunday lunch to reminisce. The food was upmarket and good. The menu choice was really good.

Good food all round.
Feb 2020 • Family
We used the online booking system to reserve a table. This was easy and simple to do. The manager had set up a table for us on arrival and suggested we move to a better area. The food was well presented and portion size was good. Food was served piping hot and service was friendly and efficient. We were on a time limit and food was serve quickly following our order being made. The steak and mushroom pie was particularly tasty with the meat being of good quality. The sandwiches were also of high quality.

Let's just say £14.25 for a peroni and a large glass of wine is just expensive for a place with no atmosphere unless you know the bar staff

The pub to be in!
Jul 2018 • Family
This pub is a very warming place and it always makes me smile when I go here. As a family member, everyone is calm and relaxed. (and the quality of the apple juice is great!) Highly recommend!

Disappointing
Jul 2018 • Friends
I recently visited here with my Sister and her boyfriend. I have been a few times a couple of years ago and always loved it.

I’d traveled from South Wales and my sister and boyfriend from Norwich as our mum lives here and we used to and also our grandma and great grandparents before us.

When we arrived we were asked to show ID as it was a Saturday night, absolutely no problem as we all are over 18 and have ID. However the bouncers on the door were extremely hostile and rude, especially a big guy with a beard. We had just come out and hadn’t had a drop to drink and he asked my sister “are you okay?” For no apparent reason. I said “she’s fine, we’ve only just come out” to which he responded in a very aggressive and hostile manner. He then checked our ID’s and I said “I’m sorry, have I annoyed you in some way?” He then went in to a huge tirade about how I had questioned his authority etc. Being a professional person and mother of two, I didn’t expect to have to deal with a complete jobs worth on the door and be spoken to like a child with a low IQ. It’s quite often bouncers who let placed like this down. Being the bigger person I said “well I’m sorry if you have misinterpreted what I said and thank you for your time” and then entered the bar.

It took a long time to get served and there were people who had been served drinks leaning on the bar and not moving to let others in. A particularly perverse old man literally slowing eyeing me up and down.

We had one drink and left. I’ve always been extremely fond of Albert Road and it’s diverse night life but this experience has made me question if I’ll ever return to this bar.

Maybe the establishment should remind the bouncers that just because some people cause problems for them does not give them the right to verbally attack calm sober people.

Rip-off drinks pricing; next time I’ll go elsewhere.
May 2018 • Friends
I paid just under £15 for one pint and one glass of wine here recently and I would like to know how the management of this establishment can justify charging such ridiculous prices. This is Southsea, not London- but now I do understand why, on a bank holiday weekend, the place was nowhere near as busy as it’s been in previous years. With so much new competition opening up in the area, the Vaults is digging itself into a hole by pricing out its clientele- and I for one will be happy to drink elsewhere next time. Rip-off Britain at its worst- shameful.

We popped in here for a quick drink. Really friendly staff. We asked about the beers and incredible what she rolled off! A good bottle of a sav blanc.

Over priced & limited customer focus
Apr 2017 • Couples
Party of 4 booked on line for a late afternoon meal on a Sunday. Although the venue was far from busy table was not available when required even allowing for a 30 minute wait. More disappointing was the price of a cask beer - £5.85 for a 4.1% pint. Nothing special about it other than the price - disgusting. Beers served in two bars but there is not one consolidated beer list. Had to visit both bars to appreciate what was on offer. Walked out in the end having not been here for a while and certainly that trend will definitely continue after this experience.

An outing with friends left me with a chipped tooth.
Dec 2016 • Friends
I went to meet a couple of friends for a catch up and decided on food. I had chips, chicken satay & garlic hummus with flatbread. For £13 quire pricey for how dry the half a chicken breast was and how bland the hummus was. (No garlic or very lack off). The peanut sauce that came with the chicken satay and the chips were quite tasty. I continued to eat. And somewhere along the line (I think from the hummus) I felt something hurt my two teeth at the back. The pain was horrible. When I eventually got it out.. it turned out to be a stone. I checked it several times to make sure it wasn't an uncooked chickpea. But no definitely a grey stone. Almost like what you find at the bottom of a fish tank (see picture attached). The girl had clearly over heard me complaining to my friends and cleared her plate but refused to come back for mine. She cleared the other table next to mine but clearly ignored me when I tried to get her attention. In the end with the bar staff either on their phone or with the waitress hiding from me. With places to be being my only day off I decided to leave a note.. I circled the stone saying much appreciation for the stone in my food and the tooth ache. Many thanks! I have two chipped teeth (not major but enough for me to feel) and suffered a toothache for several days afterwards. Eventually it got better. However I'm sure I'll need dental work for the damage that has been done. I refused to eat at the wine vaults in 2013/2014 because the hygiene rating was a 2. When I checked after my meal (December 2016) the hygiene rating was still a 2. (You'll probably find all this info through the council and through scores on the door) & now I know why.. will always check before I eat at establishments. Maybe they should just stick to the beverage kind of things. Avoid for food at all costs.. if you want to keep your teeth!!
