I actually had not known there is such a place at the seaside, until I was there! It looks amazing, together with the seaside fortifications it creates a beautiful spot for photographs.

I have been walking past this church for over twenty years and it has never been open. Then on the 7 June we came across the open gates, all part of the D-Day celebrations. The roof is missing, bombed out during WW11 but the far end is intact and is beautiful.

It is amazing that this building looks so intact from a distance. The missing roof though is a bit of a worry when it is raining!! We were lucky the sun was shining on it when we were there - could say the sun was shinning on the righteous

Church first built in 1212, and lost most of its roof in an air raid in 1941. It has some amazing stain glass windows and the stone work is a must see.

The architecture and history of this superb old Garrison Church are completely absorbing. So much to see and learn. Once you have delved into the history and seen the effects of the WWII German fire bombs, you will be captivated.
Talk to the volunteers who are there to help. They are very knowledgeable and full of interesting facts and local history.
Check opening times before you go or you will not be able to see inside the building.

A quaint little church not far for the tourist attractions of Portsmouth. An easy walk to visit and one is greeted warmly by the staff in attendance, with all questions answered, should one be interested in the history of this little place, which dates back to 1212, when it was built as part of a hospital complex. .

A lovely structure situated in the Old Town, but opening times need to be checked. It is a beautiful little Church which has a lot of history within it. Friendly and helpful volunteer guides happily recount the history as well as explaining the stories behind the stained glass windows and answering any questions. The Church has a serene feel to it and entrance is free. It is well worth a visit.

Run by English Heritage with limited open hours, it is nonetheless worth the time to visit this church with it's long and dark history.
A bishop murdered by naval seamen, leading to the Excommunication of the entire town of Portsmouth; eventually withdrawn; seized by King Henry VIII and used as an armoury; Restored in 1767 to become the Garrison church; Partially destroyed in 1941 by German bombs, when all the stained-glass widows were blown out and the Nave rendered roofless; New glazing fitted between 1947 and late 1980s featuring the link between the garrison, the church and Portsmouth.

Yes, the church is still in regular use by the military, making it the oldest garrison chapel in the world.
