The Round Tower is part of the old seafront fortifications of Portsmouth in Old Portsmouth south of the harbor and dockyard area. It is simply open to the public and free and it is connected to a wall. One can go up into the tower, and walk along the top of the wall to an earthen rampart to the south. It is interesting and has some nice views of part of the town as well as the water.

A fifteenth century tower, built to defend the harbour entrance, free to wander all over it,inside its passageways or climb to the top, open 24 hours a day, every day, forms part of the seafront walk all around the harbour, gives you great views over the Solent.

The place to view the navy ships and other ships arriving & leaving Portsmouth harbour. The tower which is made of large blocks of sandstone is very impressive, I bet the tower has seen a lot of history.

Its a great place to be with perfect viewing platform. Its free to enter, so just climb up and sit at the top. There are few shops underneath and small beach area. Also there is free 1 hour parking in nearby streets.

Several years ago I worked for a building maintenance company that had the contract for service and upkeep of the Square Tower.
They had booked a job with us, but due to an emergency the engineer was unable to attend, so I had to call the management of the Tower to reschedule for the following day.
The woman I spoke to was utterly vile and appalling, screaming the worst possible things down the phone at me. She was so rude that I was left in tears. She was simply utterly hideous.
The worst thing is, I was a regular at events at the tower before this; I knew the woman I was speaking to and had spoken to her at length before. She had always been kind, polite, friendly and lovely. However the minute she didn't know who I was, and she only thought of me as 'just an assistant, she really showed her true colours.
You can always tell what people are like based on how they treat those they think are beneath them.
I've not gone back to the tower and have used other venues for events since.

Saw this tower during a self-guided walking tour of Old Portsmouth. Interesting piece of history and there are some lovely shops located underneath the wall that the tower is located on.

A good thing to do if visting Portsmouth is to walk along the historic fortifications. Good views of the harbour and beach. On your way you walk though this tower. A few signs to tell you what you a looking at.

It is a lovely place for a walk. Very easy to climb but gives a decent view. I think it would be nice to add some boards with information as the place has a great history but you cannot learn it at the spot. Still, it is free of charge so further complaining would be inappropriate.
