    Old town shops
Lovely area to browse some old shops. Some of the store keepers were a tad hard sell which marred the experience. If you want antique jewellery this is the place to go although a bit pricey. Close to the main area with lots of places to eat and drink.

    Love the lanes
Love both sides of the lanes. Jewellery is amazing. I always go to camelots and they are brilliant and the service is amazing. After getting my rings cleaned we stopped for some drinks in nearby pubs. Then went to other lanes for a wonder around the shops. Love Brighton for the choices it offers.

    Get lost!
This was our first time in this area and it won't be our last. This is a city with lots of good reasons to visit and the lanes are certainly one of them. Far from your usual bland big name shops this place is full of individuality and it is great for just losing yourself as you were always discovering new things. Independent bars, restaurants and shops dominate here and that's a refreshing change and gives it a unique character. The place is full of characters as well and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. A couple of good pubs and then a meal in a wonderful French restaurant and none of them chains or big brands.

Great experience, loved North Lanes and Boho style. Lots to do, eat, drink, people watch.
Visited at the weekend, great place and don’t miss North Lanes, which has more of a Boho style. Great individual shops and people, tables to eat and drink in the side roads. Loved the vibe, don’t miss out. Loved it.

    Veritable labyrinth
Worth a walk around. Seemed to be many jewellery shops? There are some nice pubs and bars to stop in. Quite narrow in places and when busy a bit cramped. Intriguing place to meander through.

Once the heart of the fishing town of Brighthelmstone, The Lanes is Brighton’s historic quarter. it’s a short walk from the seafront and the Brighton Pier. The tightly-packed neighbourhood comprises late 16th and 17th century houses in a rabbit warren of tightly packed lanes.

Most visitors to the city will probably end up here during a stay in Brighton, taking a wander through its network of brick-paved narrow lanes and passageways. It seems to be largely full of small independent (and very expensive) jewellery and antique shops, and boutiques specialising in higher end homeware and knickknacks, interspersed with galleries, quaint tea rooms and restaurants. And whilst its specialty shops held little interest to us, and the crowds at the time of our visit were quite intense (no social distancing), it’s a picturesque part of Brighton and deserves a once-over if you are visiting the city for the first time.

To me it's no longer where it's all happening in Brighton these days. It's the bohemian shabby chic neighbourhood of North Laine which is drawing the mega crowds these days.

Liked the signage and wall art around the area, not too busy on this breezy January Saturday but plenty to see. Became a little bit numb to the many jewellery shops, some beautiful pieces but so many sellers of similar products. Turned right away when one shop owner came from inside her shop to ask us if we needed help, it just felt desperate and certainly wasn't welcome. It's not a good tactic! Some great eateries though and pleasant to wander around.

Lots of interesting shops in the Lanes. Their attraction is partly the narrow street. But this can lead to annoyance because of the number of people in a small space. Try nearby North Laine. Lots of independent shops on wider roads like Gardner Street.

There are many more rough sleppers and people with drink and drug issues hanging around and begging. The graffetti is prolific and it all feel very seedy. So many shops have gone bust or sell less interesting and divers things.

My daughter and I visit Brighton on a regular basis and loved the vibe about the place, in particular, the lanes and music/theatre venues. However, over the past couple of years, it seems to be in decline. Unfortunately, it all feels a bit too edgy, grubby and sad. We visited on Saturday 4 July 2020 and I have to say we couldn't wait to get back home, even after being stuck at home for weeks.

Many a year since we had been to Brighton and we had forgotten just how charming The Lanes are. Plenty of intriguing retail outlets combined with antique outlets, pubs and restaurants. Just as you think you're coming to the end another parade of shops appears.
Lots of interesting characters adorn the streets and there is a real retro feel to the whole area.
Some of the second-hand clothing stores might have items with crazy prices but there is enough to satisfy the browser and/or bargain hunter.
Great way to spend a few hours. Recommended.

Great place for browsing and lots of individual shops which is nice to see. There are a lot of jewellery shops and I was lucky to find a small bronze figure at a decent price. Makes you want to come back and explore some more !

I was recommended to visit The Lanes as it was "full of interesting little shops" - well, I spent a long time looking for these interesting shops but failed to find many!
The area seems to have been taken over by jewellery shops (new and secondhand) all charging rather high prices and I was advised by one shop owner, that they were trying to copy theJewellery Quarter in Birmingham. (The famous quarter in Birmngham has been there for a long time and I have visited on many occasions to buy jewellery and have special items made to my specifications.)
There are also a lot of bars and cafes, (not forgetting empty shops) but there are a few interesting places; an antique armoury shop was fascinating, a rubber duck shop, a leather clothing shop and so on but it is not as good as I thought if would be.

We took a walk around The Lanes while in Brighton for a short break in January 2024. We were surprised to find that about 90% of the shops there are jewellers and mostly high end / expensive - we had expected a much wider range of shops within the rustic alleys. There was a fudge shop we found, which made a nice change and sold us some delicious fudge - well recommended.

Apart from that The Lanes was underwhelming to say the least.

The lanes are narrow alleys intertwining the back streets of Brighton...and occupied by many independent shops, which I love. Brighton is like the Manchester of the south...free spirited, open-minded and just doing its own thing. I love it.
So...just go wandering and who knows what you might find?
