- Jaffathecat1610 contributionsStunning coastal patk with lots to see & doWalked here from Swanage as far as the castle & lighthouse yesterday and it was a beautiful crisp, clear day which enabled great views out to see & the isle of Wight in the distance. Interesting bird life with a variety of sea birds & the park even has its own learning centre which had a star gazing evening open to all tonight. Great way to spend an afternoon. Will definitely return to discover more on our next visitVisited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 2, 2024
- Paul WManchester, United Kingdom245 contributionsWell Worth The VisitDurlston Country Park lies on the South West Coastal Path making it very easy to access. There's also parking. We visited during a short holiday in Swanage and loved our time there. There's plenty to see and the cafe offered a good range of food and drinks.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 17, 2024
- Nicholas hLondon, United Kingdom199 contributionsWell worth a visitThis is so well done. There is something for everyone. We walked from Swanage via the coastal path and Peveril point. The exhibition shows information regarding the history of the building and what you are able to see on your visit. The cafe/restaurant is also of a very high standard. The fish and chips are excellent, especially after a long walk!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 21, 2024
- Cathryn B5 contributionsAmazing views and a delicious Gluten Free Vegetarian breakfast! The views from the restaurant are just amazing. Friendly, efficient staff and thoroughly recommend the Gluten Free Vegetarian breakfast, such a treat for a Coeliac! Lots of options for non Coeliacs too. Helpful staff in the gift shop also. It was so fab we had two visits to Seventh Wave restaurant and Durlston, just a perfect place..Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 24, 2024
- Patricia BBorough of Brentwood, United Kingdom39 contributionsHighly RecommendedAn excellent and an inexpensive introduction to the Jurassic Coast. Descend from the Car Park to the Castle. Free entry, information and maps. There was an art exhibition, a short film on local fossil finds, a lovely multi screen film on coastal nature. There is a good cafe with daily specials. It leads out onto a variety of marked walking trails. You only have to pay for time spent in the Car Park.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 10, 2024
- janet aSidmouth, United Kingdom59 contributionsA Beautiful Day OutThis was an amazing place - so unexpected. Everything took our breath away - the views, the birds and the wildlife in general. The Information Centre manned by volunteers was so helpful. Buy a Trail Pack for £2 and take whatever trail you fancy. We did three trails. All the trails had information boards, and we learned a lot on each trail we took. There were plenty of benches too, and you can hire a mobility scooter if you have any difficulty or tiredness in walking. All this, and it is entirely FREE! You just have to pay in the car park. The Castle cafe which is called Seventh Wave Restaurant was also excellent. Something for everyone. We had lunch there and it was reasonably priced, nicely presented and delicious. My daughter is vegetarian and praised the quality and presentation of her meal. Would highly recommend. There was also an Art Exhibition downstairs & a video presentation of Sunrise to Sunset in every season at the park. A truly wonderful day at Durlston Country Park. Just go!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 16, 2024

- Jonathan A9 contributionsLovely relaxing place to visitAbsolutely loved this place, you only need to post for car parking which is not expensive. The castle is lovely and very dog friendly, the staff in the shop and tea room after really nice. There are exhibitions in the castle which you can also take dogs in. The walk is beautiful and really well done, with a space themed walk around the castle leading to an impressive globe. The views are spectacular, especially on a clear sunny day. Get away from the masses and spend a few hours away from it all. Very peaceful, thanks for a great visit.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 22, 2024

We ate here in the summer of 2019 and had a lovely time sadly this time we couldn't get a table; having explored we found the viewing room above the main restaurant and thought we could have a tea and cake up there and offered to carry the tray up ourselves. We were offered take away as an option and in hindsight the tables upstairs were filthy and it would have not been an enjoyable experience. such a wasted gem that could be turned into a wonderful upper tea and coffee area with a dumb waiter lit to avoid any H & S issues. Possibly used as a school/education room I presume but would have been a nice place to sit regardless if the tables were at least clean. needs some love and would be a huge asset, and make for some more happy customers in the future. We may pop back in may...let me know if you use this suggestion :) :)

Hi Mel
Thanks for your review and your suggestions. The café does get very busy after Christmas - (it's a great place for a post-Christmas walk!) - you can book in advance if you want to be sure of getting a table. Sorry that the Belvedere tables were not clean - do please draw any cleaning issues to the attention of the Rangers and we will rectify. The Belvedere is a great space - as the views are so stunning, we try to keep it for flexible use, including small exhibitions, private hire or as an overflow for the café (though we are planning to get some new furniture later this year.

Maybe early in the year is not the best time to visit Durlston Country Park. Many of the footpaths were iether very muddy or closed for renovation. We tried to get a drink but the restaurant was full and there is no facility for people with dogs to get anything to eat or drink. Rather a pity.

Hi mjatatas,
Sorry you were not able to enjoy the paths you wanted to - we have lots of working going on at the moment to make the paths in the woods and clifftop less muddy and more accessible - they will all be open again before the Easter holidays and should be worth the wait! In the meantime, the meadows and Coast Path from Tilly Whim are popen as normal.
You are most welcome to bring dogs into the restaurant for a drink or meal - it can get busy at weekends, but you can prebook. Altyernatively, sandwiches, drinks and snacks are available in the shop.
Hope to see you again soon,

I would recommend walking to Durlston via the park at the edge of Swanage then along the south west coastal park. Midway along the route you can either choose a flatter path or a slightly more interesting path with steps and slopes. The latter option would not be good for anyone unsteady on their feet.
There are lots of viewpoints along the path with seating. The path goes to Durlston with the globe, the main building containing the restaurant & displays etc, and the nature trail which I have yet to visit. The path continues on past the caves, which are sadly not open to the public since 1972, the radar station, a bird watching station, the lighthouse and then beyond along the coast. I did not get to the lighthouse as the path appeared to go over the edge of the cliff and my fear of heights kicked in!
The restaurant in the main building is well staffed and run and everything is kept clean & tidy. On my visit I had a Chai Latte & the Halloumi Burger with onion rings & Triple Cooked Chips. It was very tasty and very filling.
They have different events and classes throughout the year at Durlston. I was going to attend the Saxon reenactment event but I think it was cancelled due to inclement weather. I will visit again this year to walk the nature trail .

We always have a family walk from Swanage up to Durlston Country Park. There are breath taking Views on the way up and at the end of the walk you can relax inside and outside of the restaurant. Lovely food and drinks. Well worth a visit.

I cannot speak highly enough of Durlston. We arrived shortly after 10am with plans to stay for 2 hours and ended up staying all day.
My wife is a little disabled and struggles with inclines and distances. But no problem , they provided us with an all terrain motorized “Tramper” for her to use. This allowed her to visit nearly all of the estate and enjoy the incredible scenery. I walked around 4 miles in total and the Tramper went everywhere . This is an awesome service that is provided for free (we made a decent donation and would encourage everyone to do likewise) and allows those with disabilities to enjoy this fantastic facility. Incredibly, entrance to the facility is also free and what value it is! Please make a donation!
The staff and volunteers were all very knowledgeable and nice, there is a good cafe (vegan options available) and there is ample parking, the cost of which is reasonable and is the only required charge.
The trails are amazing, especially the coastal ones, with terrific views over to Old Harry Rocks and the Isle of Wight. There is loads of history and superb wildlife everywhere.
A fantastic day out, highly recommended.

Durston Country Park is situated on the cliffs with stunning views over Swanage Bay to Old Harry Rocks with Bournemouth & the Isle of Wight beyond. For the price of a car park ticket you can stroll around the beautiful grounds & enjoy dramatic sea views and a large variety of birds, insects, animals, plants flowers & trees making it a great experience for all. The Castle has a shop, restaurant/cafe with inside & outside seating, permanent as well as varying exhibitions of local art & photography and interesting educational features for kids of all ages. On this year's holiday we had breakfast there four times as it really is such a special place. Due to pesky Covid restrictions access to the lavatories is currently quite convoluted and although acccess for all has been improved this year the walks are hilly in places. Small prices to pay for such a special experience, take a camera and binoculars if you have them and you definitely won't regret it.

We enjoyed a lovely sunshine filled morning here, beautiful views a great rugged walk in places but also tarmac paths if you prefer. Lots of parking . Some great info boards for the history. A lovely place to take kids as lots of space.
We thought the staff were very friendly and being very Covid aware. The food is all very good but would recommend looking at the coffee ( something nicer) a quality brand.

This is a beautiful place with a variety of walks suitable for all ages and abilities. Even though I went with my adult children, we thoroughly enjoyed attempting the obstacle courses, the swings and hammocks along the woodland trail. On another day, we had a more adult walk to the lighthouse and across the hills behind it. For those with wheelchairs or pushchairs, there are well keps paths through the woodland and down towards the lighthouse, although there are some steep hills that may be difficult for some. When we went, the cafe was short staffed due to staff having to isolate, so service wasn't at its best and the cake was stale, but I don't want to be too harsh as I understand that this was a difficult time for them.

Hi Kerry!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a nice review. We've found that people of all ages are enjoying our improved woodland trail and it's so great to hear! We hope you enjoyed the views of the Coast on your walk to the lighthouse! We try and keep our paths as well kept as possible and also have some off-road mobility scooters for hire to help people up those steeper hilly parts!
We're sorry to hear about your experience in the café, and thank you for your feedback and understanding. We will make sure to pass this on to our café manager. Over all we're glad to know that you enjoyed your visit with us and hope you come again soon!

Firstly, we found signage to here was lacking, not easy to find.
For those unfortunate to have mobility issues there is a lot of undulating of the footpaths and a little uneven in places.
Not sure what we were expecting but we did not find a lot to do, after the coastal walk from which there some good views, bird watching in season.
We did go to the cafe, seemed a bit disorganised, and when my wife went to the Ladies she found the smell overwhelming. To be fair when staff were advised of this there did refer the matter.
This is not somewhere we would revisit.

Hi Keith
Thanks so much for taking the time to review us! Sorry your visit was disappointing - we love sharing Durlston with people and really want everyone to have a great experience. If it helps, there is some useful info on how to find us on our website - we are a bit tucked away! As you say, Durlston is a bit hilly in places, but there are some great flatter walks and our Tramper mobility scooters are great for less mobile visitors to explore. There is more info on our Access for All page. Yes, the birdwatching is great here throughout the year and we have some lovely events - the Ranger in the Castle can help you make the most of your visit. Glad to hear your complaint about the toilets was dealt with promptly - we know how important this is! Do hope you will come again and hope we can give you a better experience next time

Allegedly there is a castle in Durston Country Park, but that is something of a mis-nomer.
The 'castle' is really a large house built to ordre by a local business man. the house is now mainly a conference venue, shop and cafe. There are some great views of the bay and 'Old Harry Rocks' from the balcony, so it is worth it for that but not much else.

My family will be visiting Durlston Country Park, this summer. Is it possible to picnic in the park, what facilities for picnicking are there.?
Written June 13, 2018
Great choice to visit, lovely place, yes there are picnic areas near to the car park and toilets although I’m sure if you venture out a little further you will find good views, if you follow the path down towards the globe you should find a spot there too.
It does get busy there so might be an idea to arrive reasonably early.
