What a wonderful treasure trove of times past. Wide array of antiques and displays. Very atmospheric. All well presented. Not all of the museum was open when I visited which is a shame. Creaky floors and original furniture added to the atmosphere.

Thank you Lois for taking the time to give us a review. We pride ourselves on our creaky floors so glad you enjoyed them and we hope you will have an opportunity to return when the last 2 rooms currently closed can be reopened to take us back up to 14 exhibition rooms in total next year. Thanks and Regards Museum Manager

On my first visit to Totnes, we popped in here for a look around. I'm glad we did! It's very quaint with some interesting local information. The best thing is the building itself, deceptively large! The displays are great, it's free entry and the guy working at reception was really friendly. They rely solely on donations to keep going, so please show your support. As it's on 3 different levels, it wouldn't be suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.

Hello, thank you so much for your feedback regarding Totnes Museum,, we are so pleased you enjoyed your visit. You are quite right our building is larger than it looks from the outside. We do rely on the generosity of our Visitors to keep the Museum open so thank you for your support in highlighting this. Sadly due to the nature of our building we are not wheelchair friendly other than the ground floor and the garden, however, buggies can be left in the shop area, and the little one taken on a tour of the Museum. May I thank you again for taking the time to give us your feedback. regards, Kate. Museums Custodian

Lovely little Museum set on three floors. Inside of an the Elizabethan merchant's house and how life was then. This house includes some collections dating about 5000BC, as well as rooms showing the works of Charles Babbage to whom we owe the forerunner of the Computer, the Ophthalmoscope, Uniform Postal Rate ( later the penny stamp ) and many more.

A very informative and beautiful house. A must see if you get to Totnes.

My wife & I love history, artifacts & old things. That's why she loves me! This is a very interesting house 2 visit. The staff are expertly knowledgeable, warm & friendly. There are 3 floors of different rooms to look in & most exists you can actually handle. There is something for everyone here. A room dedicated to Babbage the inventor of the first computer. An Elizabethan bedroom, enjoyable suite of its time. There are a few railway relics for the train fanatics like me. There are games for the children to learn as they experience & play. In the kitchen There are herbs & spices that you can feel & smell. There is a pharmacy with all the old bottles, remedies & potions. You must look out for the original elizabethan go cart complete with metal & leather suspension. I'd like to see a toy manufacturer make one of those today. We spent over one hour in this house that was originally owned by a wool trader & it was time that passed very quickly. We'll worth a visit.

We loved our visit to this authentic little house, with its extensive collection of historical bic a brac, implements and clothing. The little Pharmacy was particularly fascinating, and we really enjoyed reading about the potions and cures prescribed in Elizabethan times. Children can dress up in period clothing and complete activity sheets. Well worth a visit.

Part of the attraction of this well laid out little museum is the lovely old building itself. An interesting section on Charles Babbidge of computer fame, and the Lee ring was fascinating. We spent more time here than we had envisaged.

The day started by us missing a connection to go and visit another recommend attraction else where any way to make the best of a bad job we decided to have a good look round Totnes from the outside it was a very unimpressive frontage for a museum and to see the entrance fee of £3.00 per person i was having second thoughts to cut a long story short we myself and my wife gate crashed a guided tour of Totnes for a group of foreign visitors in the herb garden located at the rear of the museum this was the briefest insight into what you can expect from this excellent multi period time capsule located in the middle of a bustling 21st century town .
The overall experience was to put into a single word enthralling you were met in the entry room to pay by a pleasant gentleman behind a desk who took your fee i paid and was just walking away when he said stop dont forgot your guide and this passing a device akin to a phone handset use the keys on this with each room you visit in turn and be prepared for in my opinion the best in situ museum offalit

We found this museum by chance and what a find. It is packed with things to see and the floor given to Charles Babbage's life was brilliant, a person that should be included in the history lessons at school these days. We spent a good hour there and and would've gone back another day but we were on holiday and found it on our last day. Don't miss the garden outside it is a little gem. So reasonably priced to get in and the gifts were extremely good value for money.
