The pub gained much publicity when despite having a well know owner who was involved in local politics, the place took steps to severely restrict the licence even to the point of closure. Very entertaining for onlookers and it made the Clipper even more notorious,...More

But I like it. Classic old union Street. Not a vast mahogany and brass beer hall but a notorious all night drinking place. Better to be in company. Not somewhere I would think of going alone.
