Such a lovely place, shame we didn't experience it because of the rude tall blonde waiter.

He was the most rude and patronising man I ever encountered. After a long week of stressful hospital appointments my partner decided to take me out for a little treat to help me feel better. The door staff was lovely and everything seemed nice but when we got seated I did not hear what the staff member said about how we order.

I am disabled and really struggle hearing in busy places so we assumed it was table service and waited for a bit but saw the ladies next to us take some drinks to the bar and come back with others so assumed that it might not be? Waited a bit longer but we didn't even have menues so my partner went to take some so we could have a look and know what to order.

The man that sat us down came over and told us off for "doing my job, you don't come in here and do my job, you're in a really nice restaurant this is not what you do" and patronised us to hell and back. I did apologise and said I am disabled and hard of hearing but he carried on a tirade and Talked down on us, treating
us like lesser people. Even more so when we moved to the table next to us as ours was small and cramped and moved a glass out of the way. We didn't rush him to clean it, simply moved one glass and he just about blew a fuse.

I don't understand how you can work in such a nice place as a person with absolutely no decorum, customer skills or class. Really big shame for such a staple of Plymouth to employ such individuals who as I can see have had numerous complaints. Sort it out, it's illegal to discriminate against disabilities and even ignoring that, shameful to walk around with a chip constantly on your shoulder.

Absolutely love this place! We visit Plymouth every year for a weekend Gin Jolly from St. Ives, Cornwall. The staff are friendly and professional, the ambience and décor is perfect. Plymouth Gin, along with Tarquins (Cornish gin) in my opinion, is one of the best gins on the market. A few of the previous reviews have complained about lack of alternative drink options available but seriously, why would you visit a bar above a Gin Distillery and expect to drink anything else! Will be back next year : )

There has never been a time I have gone to the Refectory and had a disappointing experience. From the staff and their endless knowledge about flavours alongside providing a brilliant customer experience! To the atmosphere which never sheds a dull moment. I think you would be hard pressed to go elsewhere and experience what you can here. To Coco, Sonny and the rest of the team keep up the phenomenal work!

I visited this place for a second time in June 2022 during Jubilee weekend and it was a blast. Not too busy, but still an upbeat atmosphere, I loved trying all the different. cocktails that the wizards behind the bar were able to whip up.

My first trip was in January 2019, and had a great time then too!

P.S. I have honestly had a dream about the olives they serve here as complimentary snacks. Do not sleep on this.

Amazing bar in one of the oldest working gin distilleries in the Uk.
The staff are friendly, knowledgable and very welcoming. There’s a real nice ambience about the place. The cocktail menu is excellent - obviously gin based but they are happy to go off menu.
Visited a few times now and have never been disappointed.
No. 1 place for a gin and tonic in Plymouth.

A great place to relax with the best cocktails in town!
Great decor and atmosphere. Great for girly nights or special dates. Best cocktails I have EVER tasted. Also staff are very friendly and sociable, making you feel welcome and there for your every cocktail need. Love it, will definitely go back.

Historical interior within the Gin distillery, comfortably furnished and nicely decorated. Cocktail list is extensive and is based mainly around the gins produced on site, but rum, etc. cocktails are available. The list avoids the 'sex on the beach' type of cocktail going for more classy concoctions. All cocktails are £7 each. Service is slow and if you are in a group expect the last people to be receiving their drinks as the first ones are finishing theirs.

Open noon to 4.30 around Sunday lunchtime. We came down before lunch elsewhere. Delightful setting and the Cocktail of the Month, which we tried despite almost resisting the promotional patter, turned out to be just what we needs to kick off our successful and wholly relaxed afternoon. This bar room is a lovely space. The staff just right and the drinks, while not cheap where worth the money. We will probably be back and back. I worry slightly that the cocktails slip down so refreshingly and deceptively easy that a couple of hours worth could be a very pricey experience. Maybe the best tack, like us on Sunday would be to drop in for one or two just to start before moving on.

It is a smart room if you've never been here before. Coming for a first time can be tricky because you either have to have eaten at the Barbican Kitchen on the same floor or have manoeuvred through the arcane system of getting the late week membership card. They try quite hard with the cocktails but there are better locally.

Back again after about six months it felt a bit different, maybe despite the exceptional interior and roof, it has become a bit humdrum. We came in at about 9.45 on Friday evening. About half the seats occupied, a few squat in bar stools. There was a loud sound system of sufficient quality to have made us hoped as we had heard the jazz though the open window onto Southside St on a muggy hot night, might have been live. It was not. The people at the tables all looked a bit subdued, no particular sparkle and many had extra bags and some took photographs, as if they had found the place in one of the tourist guides and were working down their checklist. Then a father and mid twenties son came and sat next to us, just over from QAB after a days sailing. Their evening was almost immediately flattened when the father ordered a couple of Tom Collins only to be told (with no apparent justification), ' I think your young friend has had too much, you can have a soft drink if you wish'. Completely odd, given no hint of intoxication or florid behaviour, sad for them, given that the father had come in on a corporate membership card, and they were plainly beginning their evening. There was no issue taken by them and no flicker of tension but they left without finishing their fruit juices and it left us wondering whether not only does the refectory get unnecessarily picky about the type of people are allowed in but of the authoritarian and arbitrary way they treat punters once they are inside. Surely a quality bar can be run better than this. No wonder perhaps that the place is no longer pulled a broad and lively spontaneous crowd of switched on fun folk. I may not bother to look in here again for a long while.
