Future in doubt as MOD to sell barracks.
Sep 2016 • Friends
This remains a delightful and historic theatre with a number of unspoilt features. But the MOD have just announced that RMB Stonehouse is to be sold with a dozen other properties and the future of this site as well as the future placement of the Royal Marines are uncertain. I'm not sure whether the theatre and the rest of the barracks have any form of protection because as Crown Property it may not be subject to the planning listing rules. Let us hope that something may happen that will preserve or enhance the theatre and bring it back to something more like full time use.

Had a wonderful visit and tour. The tour guide was very informative and made the tour fun. We loved it and bought way too much in the gift shop.

Hardly known little Plymouth theatre.
May 2014 • Friends
This listing needs a selection of interior and outside up to date photos. This is a near perfect little theatre.hardly mucked about with for decades and with an unspoilt period style going back maybe 150 years. It's stuck right in the middle of the marine barracks which is inconvenient for ease of access or visits on non-performance days but the upside is that the MoD and it's predecessors have deliberately or by default limited any silly or major restoration or alterations. The theatre fits neatly into the impressive largely late 18th century of the barracks. There should be some better online presence describing the theatre and showing it's delightful interior together with some information about visits and performances. People on TA often dribble on with platitudes about 'hidden gems' but if there are any in Plymouth this theatre is out there with the synagogue, the prysten house and Devonport Guildhall.

Excellent little Victorian Theatre.
Aug 2014 • Friends
The Importance of Stealing Ernest by the Ermington Players at the end of August. Modern bedroom farce by spirited local amdram club. Delightful very well maintained and preserved Victorian theatre in the heart of the impressive but still completely active and operational Royal Marine Barracks in Stonehouse Plymouth. Sadly I think that rather like the Athenaeum theatre in the centre if Plymouth it is substantially underused and you have to keep an eye out for opportunities to enjoy it.

A very interesting tour of the theater. The history really amazed me . I think a Shakespeare play was going on. A must see attraction for all theater lovers. Nice shop.

such a pleasure to walk around , you really get a good sense of history and what it would have been like back in the day we were all amazed what a small area they had to work in, a must see if you like theatre.

Great little theatre. Find a reason to go!

Inside the Georgian marine barracks in Stonehouse Plymouth is an amazing little building, once a raquets court but converted in the early 1830 s into a delightful circular auditorium with neat palladian features. I have been a dozen times over twice as many years and alway been impressed and mellowed by the setting although not so often by the performances which have more often been amateur companies. Look this place out and go there when the opportunity arises. Look it up as an English Listed Building.
