About
Overlooking the sea in Plymouth harbour, Tinside Lido is consistently voted in the top 10 of Europe’s outdoor pools. Built in 1935, the lido is archetypal of the then popular art-deco style and is Grade II listed. Open only during the summer months, this beautiful salt water swimming pool is perfect for everyone and is fully accessible to people of all needs. As well as the pool itself, the facility also features a sun deck, which is generally considered to be one of the best places in Plymouth to soak up the sun, so remember to bring the sun cream.

Wonderful unspoilt Art Deco Lido
Jul 2021
Cool seawater, lovely staff, fantastic position to look out to sea when you’re not swimming. A truly unique experience. Note to Plymouth Council - don’t change it! It does’t need to be ‘like Marbella’. Appreciate and support it.

Great p,ace for a swim
Jul 2021
Old Art Deco lido. Brilliant place for a swim. Cold but ok once you get in and get moving. The water is sea water so very salty.

Glorious Tinside
Jun 2021
Booking as a tourist is a bit of a faff as you need to set up an account with the leisure company who run the pool for Plymouth Council (although this could be a COVID rather than longterm situation?) but well worth it in my opinion. The art deco building could do with more love but is still utterly stunning and the pool is even more beautiful than it looks and the water lovely. Being hardy Scots we put on our wetsuits which we had with us for our holiday in Cornwall - which I'm sure the locals thought was a bit ridiculous! - but it was only 19 degrees the day we were there so it stopped the kids getting cold and they had a ball once they got their head round the fact it was salt water. With the sun shining it was glorious.

Could be amazing
Jun 2021
This could be an amazing place but as is usual in the UK those offering leisure and hospitality experience seem to have little interest in making a facility a pleasure to use. It would be amazing to have comfortable loungers all around the side, some music, food and drink with a bit of an Ibiza vibe rather than a dull slightly delapidated facility where customers are expected to lay on a towel on a hard concrete floor, no planting to improve aesthetics either.

Cold, but Great
May 2020
I spent so much time as a child in this pool. Im so happy that it is regularly maintained and is still going strong. On a warm day this is the place to go!

Art Deco at its best
Sep 2020
A beautiful example of Art Deco that is sadly in my opinion not treasured by Plymouth city council .Should Be kept in pristine condition and lit up at night for locals and visitors to see it uniqueness and beauty in an area that is a main part of Plymouth’s tourist attraction .The Hoe and the Barbican .

Invigorating.
Aug 2020
Saturday afternoon mid August. Had to navigate city council website and then book a slot but we managed. Waterfront heaving across the Hoe, all the roads, cafes etc. Lot of traffic so lucky we came on bike which had to be secured at pavement level. Had to bring own towels. Limited facilities open in the Art Deco block because of the virus. Spectacular setting from whatever angle including in the water, which is drawn, presumably with some basic filtering from the Sound. Limited session numbers made it feel modestly attended but probably in a non carina year it would have been packed. The water was cool but not as cold as some sea water we’ve been in this year. Pity there’s no diving board and the fountain might have looked more at home in a suburban pond. Plenty of life saving folk.

Outdoor pool in amazing location
Jun 2020 • Couples
This outdoor bathing area is also known as Tinside Lido, It is was built in 1935 in the art deco style and is now a Grade all listed building.

Set in a picturesque setting overlooking Plymouth Sound and overlooked itself by Plymouth Hoe.

When we visited on Thursday 25th June both the pool and it's sun decks were empty. The Lido, which is normally open from May to September, was closed in accordance with COVID 19 restrictions. All we could do was look down from Hoe Road above and imagine the grandeur of the place when open.

It was worth a look, however, more enjoyable when open and operational, hence the average rating, dont mean to be harsh.

Winter Time
Dec 2019 • Family
What a difference the Winter makes to a terrific Local Attraction. Summer time and all is pristine and welcoming whilst on a Cold Windy Showery Christmas Eve the appearance and feel of the place is poles apart. Good to see Tinside Pool this time of the year though to fully appreciate the work that goes into making it that great family attraction it is during the long hot balmy summer days.

Where I learned to swim
Oct 2019
Accompanied by my long-suffering elder sister, it was here that I learned to swim some 75 years ago. The days always seemed sunny and endless, and I well remember how packed this pool was in those post-war days, when we graduated from the safety of this open-air pool, to the balmy seas adjacent to it and out to the waters of Plymouth Sound. Now gloriously restored after many years, empty and neglected, it is a tribute to local people who continue to patronise it. I must get my cossie on again!
