Lovely, friendly staff
Sep 2021 • Friends
Really lovely, friendly young staff. What a credit to this pub. Food is decent pub food. The fries are better than the chips. Limited real cider menu, which is a pity given it’s in Devon, but the wine menu is better than many pubs. The main garden next to the river was closed, which was also a pity on a lovely sunny day, especially as we had to sit indoors so as to be warm enough.

A good place to go if you’re not after fine dining and always a friendly welcome!

Birthday meal disappointment
Jul 2021 • Family
Birthday meal for son and family. Waited an hour for main meal - all had Sunday lunch - lamb missing from all meat option and warm only. Had to ask for condiments and extra gravy. First visit and had traveled an hour to try and needless to say won’t be hurrying back

Boxing Day disaster
Dec 2020
Family booked for boxing day, Christmas menu etc. When we arrived only Bar type menu no xmas food !!! dreadful. food very average. staff average charged for food we didn't order. The whole meal was compromised. Very disappointed. & very cold in restaurant. Expected pub to just make an effort. Of course they have excuses up their sleeve. But to not say there wont be serving a xmas menu on Boxing Day ..says it all

Good food; disappointing service
Dec 2020 • Couples
The food was nice but the service was pretty dreadful. A lovely server took our order but none of our food arrived for nearly an hour and we never received our starters. The server blamed ‘the tills’. We were then offered complimentary desserts (which was very kind) but the same server got our dessert order wrong. We didn’t bother pointing this out because we had been in the pub so long we were running late! The staff were very kind, however, and very keen to make up for their mistakes - but it spoiled what could’ve been a very nice experience. Disappointed.

Sunny Dinner

The service and food were both excellent. The pub looks fantastic following refurbishment and the new menu has great options for vegetarians. A lovely evening and would recommend!

Could be great
Aug 2020 • Friends
Very average experience from what could be an amazing pub, considering the beautiful position on the river, the huge garden and general size of the place.
Biggest complaint has to be the way we were spoken to by the guy who was on the door (in his 40s, was wearing braces).
Just unnecessarily rude and arrogant. This is not the only pub to have systems in place to deal with social distancing - there's no need to speak to your customers as though they are stupid.
Also, the food is pretty bad. The fish (fish and chips) was to begin with a low quality fillet and totally unseasoned. Put some salt on before you batter it, or it tastes of nothing. In general not much love went into the food we had (4 meals).
The rest of the staff who came to the table were ok, but not very friendly apart from one young guy who was upbeat, friendly and positive. He provided a welcome contrast to the general mood of stand-offishness.
Just be a bit friendlier and get someone in who understands food a bit better and it'll be a great place.

Lunch at The Mill on the Exe
Aug 2020 • Friends
I have been to this pub twice now to meet friends for lunch that I haven’t seen for ages due to lockdown and pubs being closed. The staff are all super professional cheerful and friendly given the current circumstances and the food has always arrived promptly and nicely cooked. I have the gluten free fish and chips which is lovely. Yes they have a restricted menu but still plenty of choice and mostly gluten free as well. The place is both clean and tidy and there is a choice of indoor or outdoor seating with of course a lovely view of the river Exe. I can still highly recommend this pub if you are looking to venture out for lunch and have concerns. Pick a nice day and sit outside you won’t be disappointed.

Disappointed
Dec 2019 • Couples
Was looking forward to a nice meal on new year's eve with my partner and little dog. Somewhere close enough so we could walk. Booked a table no problem, staff were accommodating on arrival, given a nice table and dog welcome. However I was very disappointed with the food. My partner had the chicken katsu burger which was OK but I'd ordered the ribs which tbh were inedible, couldn't even pull them apart to eat! I've had many ribs in the past and none have been like this. I explained and was offered something else from the menu. I ordered the turkey pie which was mediocre. I ate it but have to say I'd expected more from the food! The setting and venue and staff are great but menu and quality of food needs a rethink. The staff did handle situation well and all my drinks were taken off bill. Perhaps a new chef is the answer. Hope this is helpful.

Fantastic Steak Burger
Dec 2019 • Solo
I was recommended this gastro pub by a friend. He’s from Brixham and said I should visit if time allowed. Time was on my side. I was seated and served promptly by waiter Ben. He gave me a great table and was very professional and engaging. I had a view of the river and the log fire was behind me. Being Welsh, I opted for a pale ale and the steak burger. I asked for an alternate to chips and was given new potato’s. Cooked to perfection and served in a cornbread bun with melted cheese, lettuce and streaky bacon. I struggled to eat it all. It was a first class burger, no compromises here for sure. A very tasty and wholesome meal. I Didn’t have room for the onion rings which also looked appetising. I did manage to wash it all down with a pint of Tribute extra. Highly recommended. Five stars.
