What a find! On a very hot day this was the perfect place to walk the dog under the shade of many mature trees and lots of places left to naturalise having been sown with wild flowers, according to information plaques. Loved the wildness and...More

We visited the catacombs on a day trip to Exeter. We have visited before but wanted to see everything again. There is an interpretation board explaining about the catacombs, which is useful. The area around would be good for a picnic on a sunny day

Essentially this is a cemetery/park area. As others have pointed out, you cannot go inside unless you are lucky enough to have gone with one of the Red Coat Tours (which for 2017 seems to happen on Wednesdays and Fridays). From the outside you can...More

What do you think of when hearing the word catacombs? probably something underground, vast, gloomy and sad. Exeter catacombs are different. Sad , yes but not in the way you might expect. Very atmospheric, especially on an autumn afternoon. A fascinating insight into the world...More

I am told there are guided tours to go in and think you absolutely have to do that as from the outside it's pretty dull. You walk along a grassy strip to the end but then can't go anywhere unless you walk all the way...More

Yawn yawn yawn this was so boring- my advice would be to stay at home with a nice cuppa and read a book about Exeter's rich and illustrious history. Such a waste of money- gutted.

Its a peaceful graveyard, but not much to see. The tombs are locked! It's a shame as I really wanted to see the history, well some of it. Maybe next time.

We have been thinking of going to the catacombs for a while and it was well worth the visit. The guide was great and full of knowledge and was very understanding that I was staying at the back as I have mild claustrophobia with out...More

I love the mystery and supernatural allure of a graveyard, and St Bartholomew’s does not disappoint, with its eerie catacombs built against the city wall. Apparently they were the first cemetery buildings to be built in Britain in an Egyptian style; now they are rather...More
