Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

An excellent place to visit if you are a member of the national trust or English heratige then one member gets in free. The castle tours are excellent with lots of interesting history explained. The walks in the gardens are good with some beautiful flowers. Well worth a visit

Visted with wife, young child and grand parents. Tour of the castle was excellent - guide was engaging and extremely knowledgeable which made for a very enjoyable time. The Alice in Wonderland experience was very good value, well thought out and acted brilliantly. Was a little disappointed that the forge seemed to be closed and that the Woodland garden was... More

Brilliant and slightly unexpected enjoyable day for my husband and I, our two daughters aged 16 & 10, was something there we all were interested in and enjoyed! Alice in Wonderland was the theme for the week and our youngest daughter really enjoyed the hour long interactive performance, really talented actors running it and no hidden charge to take part.... After deciding what do to today we all decided to visit this place. We weren't disappointed. We were greeted by a friendly and helpful staff at the entrance while purchasing tickets. The walk to the castle was impressive and the views are amazing. We were on the last tour of the day and it was only a small group, which... More

We were very impressed by the guided tour of this unique fortified manor dating from the 1300s. Our guide was really excellent, she made the features of the building really come alive and appealed to young and old alike. The deer park and views of the Exe and its east bank are delightful but there is little in the way... More

We visited during our holidays and so pleased that we did! Everyone enjoyed the day out, so tranquil. The deer park tractor tour was very informative. Most of all we enjoyed our castle tour. Many thanks to "Alan" for a wonderful tour! I would not recommend taking young children into the castle tour as they can get fed up and... More

What a great place. I went with my mum, dad and brother(14 years old) The staff were so friendly and welcoming it felt comfortable to be there. We went during pirate week(as I have a great fascination with pirates even though I'm 20) It turns out the pirate themed event was only aimed at smaller children however the actors playing... More

My husband and I visited here in June it was great! I loved the guided tour. I wish we could have looked a little longer in some rooms but she was really good very knowledgeable about the castle and it's past. We got to explore secret rooms hear about the "grey lady" who haunts the castle... it was a lot... More

NOT our cup of tea. IF you like watching gracious animals awaiting their doom then, please, go and enjoy.

Management response:

I'm sorry to hear this wasn't your cup of tea. The gracious animals you refer to are possibly our herd of fallow deer? I can assure you they are very well looked after and their welfare along with that of our family of pets in the Walled Garden is of a very high standard. We have never been described as... More

Powderham is a little gem. Privately owned - it has a deal where there is a discount for English Heritage members - a real bonus. It's a very relaxed place with the animal farm a few minutes walk from the car park - great for children and animal lovers and a pleasant stroll to get there. We did the tour... More
