One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

This is not the largest site however it has plenty of history and there are lots of well written information boards and some interactive short videos that give a good understanding of the history of the castle and it’s environs and it’s purpose. Great for...More

Quite an interesting castle. It doesn't look much from outside but was worth venturing in. There are some steep steps so does need a bit of fitness to get the most out of the visit.

Seen from the shore, Dartmouth Castle looks nondescript, but get inside and it is a fascinating, if small, attraction that kept us interested for a couple of hours. We walked along the cliffs from Little Dartmouth a couple of miles away and were delighted to...More

At just under a mile from Dartmouth town centre, this castle takes a little effort to get to but the walk gives lovely views over the river estuary. The different eras of building from medieval on, are clearly explained, with interpretations for children too. Lots...More

As the car park at the castle is very small (impossible for our motorhome!) we arrived on the small ferry from Dartmouth quay (£2.50pp single - dogs being free and welcomed at the castle). There is plenty of historical information at the castle and a...More

The view from the reception area must be the most spectacular anywhere in the country! Just a huge expanse of water! You can marvel at the view several times on this visit and wriggle up a couple of tricky staircases. But after that......well,that's about it...More

We arrived in the small car park to find the parking meter out of order, apparently like this for more than one year! We toured the Castle and read about the history - you need to be very able bodied as there are many steps....More

Was very quiet when we went, gladly had much of it to ourselves, it is small but don't let that put you off, it has excellent views.

We liked this castle, it may not be very big, but had some very nice views and a bit of historical information. Friendly and helpful employee at the shop. There's also a little church.

It is a small castle with big views. Did a little pirate search when there. But it was packed. Kids enjoyed it and was fine for a short visit

there are a lot of steep challenging steps so I'd advise against this one for anyone with mobility issues.
