Stunning views from the top of Dartmoor.
Sep 2020
A bracing walk across Hound Tor will certainly blow the cobwebs away. There's an impressive collection of granite tor rock formations at the top to explore and the views across Dartmoor are breathtaking. A short walk from the main tor will bring you to the remains of an abandoned 12th Century village. Be aware that if you are driving up from the Manaton direction then the roads are extremely narrow, barely single carriageway with few passing places. Unless you enjoy reversing up tiny roads to make way for other cars, I recommend using the better roads accessed from the Newton Abbot direction.

Went for a quick jaunt with the gf (not that kind of jaunt do be serious ha ha) on a wet Monday afternoon. Started raining when we got there and stopped once we left but fortunately the gf doesn't mind a moist hillock

Beautiful spot

There is a car park nearby, short, slightly uphill, walk and scramble at the rocks but lovely views. Old ruins of village a further 5 to 10 minute walk from the top.

Amazing place

Easy to find and the views are great. The medieval village behind is magical. It was fascinating to think we were walking where others walked so long ago.

Great location

Excellent free parking, Hound of the basket meals food van offers simple but excellent food, especially her home made cakes, and at very reasonable prices. Limitless walking 360 degrees from the car park, stunning scenery. Be sure to visit the ancient village ruins.

Fantastic views

Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Thigh burning walk to the top with huge rock formation to climb when you get there. Spectacular views across the moors. We spent about an hour, but I imagine if the weather is good you could walk for miles and spend the morning here. Great van in the carpark called the "hound of the basket meals" which sells much needed tea and coffee in proper mugs after the climb.

Stunning weathered granite rock formations
Apr 2019 • Family
Driving east out of Dartmoor, stopped off to ogle at the simply stunning weathered granite rock formations of Hound Tor and the area.
Free car parking and a short walk up to the tor.
Nice views.
Remember your waterproof jacket.

Easy to access and stunning - quieter than Haytor!
Jan 2019 • Family
We visited on a sunny but cold winters day. The car park is always relatively busy but you find a space in the end and on the whole it is a lot quieter than the nearby Haytor. Currently there are no parking charges in this car park unlike at Haytor.

The climb up to the Tor is straightforward and accessible to most. The actual rocks have quite a number of letter boxes hidden among them if you look carefully.

Also worth noting is the hidden passage way on the rocks to the left as you look from the car park. This is a short section of about 3 or 4 metres which kids can squeeze through and pop out the other side of the rocks. Some adults can fit too but do so at your own risk (and before dinner!).
