This is what I imagine an quintessential British small town would look like. Super picturesque and loads of stuff to do, places to eat, and shopping. All with a breathtaking background.

Give your self plenty of time to explore the area properly, there is a lot of back alleys aswell. First time visiting in many years and I enjoyed myself more than expected.

Our first visit to Chester proved to be memorable. Great shops on two levels in the rows, stunning architecture & history.

This unique historic feature alone makes a visit to Chester well worthwhile. Unfortunately there are still a few empty units, but on the plus side some new cafés and bars have moved in.

If there is one thing Chester is really known for it is the "Rows". The Rows are galleries, reached by steps from ground level, which are a second row of shops and eateries above those on the street below. Why they were built like this is anybody's guess and while some of them are original 13th century, like the Three Old Arches, many more are Victorian copies. However, whether original or a copy, they are very impressive and its well worth spending some time wandering along them. However, they do have a drawback. As they can only be reached by steps, in some cases very steep and narrow, they are neither pushchair nor wheelchair friendly.

I had to admire The Rows from the street as we just could not find the disabled access to the upper levels. On returning to the hotel we looked it up online and apparently there is disabled access but it really isn't obvious.

Found that most of the shops were either permanently closed or had shut by 5pm when we had a stroll on the upper levels

Nice selection of shops. There are a number of vacant units but that I suppose is a sign of the times we are in. Having said that there are still plenty of unique shops as well as your normal chain shops you would find in any city centre.
Great variety of shops, bars, and places to eat, in a lovely setting with mostly Tudor style buildings lining the streets.

Will definately return as half a day wasnt really enough to appreciate this city centre

The Chester rows hold an Interesting history, which we only learnt about by doing a waking tour. The tour was organised by the visitors centre and got only £8 it was interesting and very worthwhile.

The rows are two levels of shops, one ground floor and the upper walkway reached by stone steps ( at some locations steep).

There are a mixture of shops, bars and restaurants on both levels.
