We visited whilst walking the wall on a day trip to the city, if you're walking the wall then you can either take a slight detour and walk through this garden which we did but when we got back onto the wall after we had a lovely elevated view also. It was a nice place to see, but note the items there were not located they're during excavations just put there as like an outside exhibition space. You can walk through it in 5 minutes but worth doing so if in the area.

The gardens used to be well kept but now they are overgrown and neglected and they are another aspect of Chesters current decline .It is a lovely city with so much potential but the council and tourist organisations are obviously too complacent .They just think the visitors will keep coming but they won’t .The gardens need tidying up as does the riverbank and shopping areas .
Come in CWAC pull your fingers out ..Chester is a gem and it is about time you showed more ambition ..it could be as great as York if you put your minds to it

Lovely little gardens, great place to explore.
We opted to walk the city walls, look down into the Roman garden then go down and explore properly. Just as lovely from above and ground level, interesting boards, a recreation of the hypocaust, just a lovely, tranquil place.
Do make sure you visit the original hypocaust at 39 Bridge Street to see what the recreation in the garden is based on - the cafe are lovely and happy for people to go to their basement and have a look.
We liked it, and it was quiet, so ideal for our autistic nephews to escape the bustle of the city. We decided to loop back and picnic here for lunch, too.

Not an enormous amount to see. A few Roman ruins, a replica mosaic and a few information boards. Nice to have it right in the middle of the city though and something quite calming about these gardens. You can walk through and/or simply view the as you walk the city walls so easy to take a look.

Small and compact but a well preserved reminder of the Roman occupation of Chester (or Diva Victrix as they knew it). There is enough exhibits to be of interest supported by a few story boards explaining Roman ways. Sits very close to the Roman Amphitheatre, which is also worth a look.

Not that far from Chester's Roman Amphitheatre are Chester's Roman Gardens. However, "Roman Gardens" may be a bit of a misnomer because they were only created in 1949, as part of the city's contribution to the Festival of Britain held in 1951. The Gardens do, though, contain many fragments from the Roman fortress of Deva and it is a very pleasant walk past, and through, these fragments. There are columns from the exercise hall of the Roman bathhouse. There is also a reconstructed hypocaust, also recovered from the Legionary bathhouse. The gardens were remodeled in 2000 when mosaics and information boards were installed. A circular mosaic commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Chester Civic Trust in 2010. The mosaic in the reconstructed hypocaust is a reproduction of a mosaic found in the city's centre. The remodeling in 2000 also provided an exit past an image of Charon, the ferryman, to the banks of the River Dee.

The Roman Gardens were established in 1949 as Chester’s contribution to the 1951 Festival of Britain. It was to display the many Roman building fragments that had been discovered in Chester during the previous century. None of the fragments originate from the site but many come from the fortress baths on the east side of Bridge Street and others from the northern stretch of the walls.
A pretty garden, with plenty of Roman memorabilia, and various information boards about Roman buildings but not really an historic Roman site. However, there is some damage to the city wall that is located on the side of the garden which was due to the Civil War siege .
Strange really!

It was an inspired initiative to create this lovely sylvan space to display some of the incomparable artefacts from the city’s illustrious Roman past.
While visiting it was tranquil and peaceful, under the warm sunshine. Traversing, it was interesting to admire the numerous ancient items. Including an area labelled Bathing in style. All amongst the greenery and trees.

I wouldn’t make a trip out of it..( unless you are coming to the summer time film night, I live just across the river and still after all these years I still enjoy walking through.. imagining the old columns in there proper state.. and some old roman guys dipping in heated baths 2000 years ago.. it’s pretty cool.. but really it’s a 5 minute adventure.. might as well pop in for a drink at hickories and sit by the river after:)

The Roman gardens are located 500 meters south from the cathedral. It is a cosy garden with Roman ruins. Here, in addition, the open-air cinema has been located for some years. Not a must see but if you have time it might worth to have a look.

The simple answer is yes. There are steps but with side slopes that are not too steep. Well worth looking at.
