My hosts in Chester walked the River Dee with me, explaining the game of 'conkers' as we passed under a chestnut tree, and pointing out the Roman Bridge crossing the river as we walked through the "dingle" parkway along the River. We came to a...More

Seek it out, its a bit off the beaten track and maybe neglected. But unique, no fanfares and glitz but the only one in the world still in its original location.

Imagine our disappointment having spent £4 on the park and ride only to discover the shrine to Minerva looking, frankly, very old. No wonder the Roman Empire is in decline if it can’t even maintain its shrines to the goddess of defensive warfare and craftsmanship.

My father took me to this park when I was growing up. There is now a children’s play area within the park.

Located just across the river in Handbridge this is the statue of Minerva who was the main worshipped goddess of old Deva. Worth a trip here for a glimpse of Roman history still in situ

Set in a small park, just across the river Dee bridge. Carved at the site of the Roman Quarry. A stunning small shrine carved into a boulder.

A very small walk over the Old Dee Bridge into Handbridge but well worth the slight effort to see this remnant of the past. My only concern is that it is relatively unprotected and could possibly fall victim to vandals in this day and age...More
