Roman experience

Worth a visit, interactive section for kids as well. Also seeing downstairs the archaeological digs with different layers over the years is interesting

We arrived early on a rainy morning. The first part felt like a typical theme park. Very artificial! However, as we moved on, we saw the different levels of archeological digging and, at the end, real artefacts. It was fascinating, especially since, on leaving, we saw a "Roman soldier" leading a procession of primary school children into the Dewa building.... More

Took year 3 children on a school visit here. Very organised and the children didn't have chance to get bored. The Roman experience in the gardens was very good. Walking through Chester with the children chanting - was very entertaining. Would visit again and have a meal - lots of nice restaurants near by.

We had watched lots of school children marching round the city following a soldier and so thought we should visit this museum. It is obviously geared for children as there are lots of 'hands on' places but even us 'olds' found it interesting. The parts downstairs that show the different layers found in the 'digs' was great. Worth a trip... More

Everywhere you go in Chester they are very proud of their Roman heritage. This is an ideal place to visit as it explains the history brilliant in a fun and interactive way. Really reasonably priced and the staff friendly. Make sure you take cash though as it was cash only in the gift shop. Highly recommend!!!

I don't think it would inspire anyone to take an interest in the Roman empire! It advertises "sights, sounds & smells of Roman life" We were expecting something like York's yorvik centre, but were sorely disappointed! There was a puff of smoke as we went in that smelled of nothing particular... after that the only smell we could detect was... More

Cash only - so beware! Other than that, great family friendly attraction, explaining some of the history around Chester and on a wider basis too. Really great staff, knowledgeable and friendly.

I took my five year old nephew and found the staff super helpful as its starts off dark and you can miss out that bit if wanted. It is fun and informative and lots to play with and dress up for some good photos. Its not a big exhibit, but it is enjoyable and worth a visit if you are... More

Some of the ideas were amazing, like the entry made to look like you're travelling to Britain on a ship. Loved that you can try on some of the armour. They could learn a lot from the Viking's museum in York, though, if only in terms of relaying the information in a manner more interesting for all age groups.

Ignore the bad reviews. My son is a university graduate & I was formerly a teacher, and we really enjoyed our time here & feel it is well worth the small entrance fee. My daughter-in-law found it better than the museum, as she could see things in situ. The underground part is not extensive, being not much longer than a... More
