    Good Views of Chester
It is a two mile walk around the walls but it is well worth doing if you are feeling fit! There are quite a few flights of steps to go up and down as you go around the walls. You do get some interesting views over Chester. In some places, the walk comes down to street level and it is not always immediately obvious which way to go. Look for maps that allow you to orient yourself as to which way to go and where you are on the wall.

    Delightful walk on the walls.
Lovely and gentle walk around the city walls. Always something to see and time to stop and look, benches periodically and the autumn colours were lovely. Many points of interest along the way and lots of places to "get down" and explore the town or have a coffee. I would recommend this for everyone.

    The Walls, Chester
Have walked the city walls twice during October, while the weather was quite nice. There are several information plaques along the way, with interesting history about the various parts. Good views of the city, and across to North Wales (from certain points). The walls can be accessed from different places, but I normally start from the Cathedral Bell Tower, and walk round past the race course, past the castle, and down to the river, and then back along the walls, and end up by the clock tower. It takes about just over 1 hour, depending how fast you walk. I never get tired of this, as it is a lovely way to see the walls and the city.

    Fabulous
What a fantastic walk around the city walls of Chester, takes about an hour or so and plenty to see. The Roman gardens were especially good. The city itself is lovely plenty to do eat, drink etc. A must visit is the Cathedral also just beautiful.

    Really good!
It's a bit of a long walk around the city walls but it's worth doing. We went from gate to gate and ended up at the amphitheatre. Walking along the River Dee was wonderful even later in the dark.

Excellent way to see around and across the city
The walls encircle a substantial portion of the city with plenty of access points - mostly steps up along with additional steps across some of the gates, but with some sections being more accessible. Appears to be some excellent work being done on restoration of parts that have fallen into disrepair. Make a great circular walk, or with a £1.50 Walkabout map and guide from tourist information, enable a self guided tour through many interesting sites. These include some that were very quiet and appear to be off the beaten track such as cobbled St Mary’s Hill

    City In Decline
The walls are well worth a visit but it is really sad to see that CWAC have let the city fall into such sad state .The Roman Gardens haven’t been weeded or tidied for years ,the riverside walk is also covered with weeds and all the benches need refurbishing ! Then there are so many shut up shops ,and the area area near the new Homebase is full of tatty eateries ! This is our county town it is a heritage site and it deserves better than this .We all know councils are underfunded but it is about time CWAC prioritised thus jewel of the north before it is too late

Been to Chester on many occasions so don’t know why we haven’t walked round the walls before but so glad we did ! Provides a different perspective with some fantastic views of the city & its architecture. Can be a little hard on the knees at times but well worth it !

    History in every step
First time walking round the full route for the walls after visiting Chester many, many times over the years. Last time I walked on them I was at primary school and I’m now 68! We did this for my birthday in January when we stayed for a couple of days. Our Chester visits usually consist of a short trip to the shops by train from Liverpool so it was lovely to spend quality time in Chester. While walking the walls we witnessed a school party being marched around by a Roman legionnaire, I’ve never seen children so well behaved 😂, my husband and I were terrified 😂. It’s a lovely walk and you get a real feel of the history Chester is seeped in. Well worth it

    A Great Walk Around Chester
When you visit Chester, you have to do the city walls walk. It's a great walk as the walls encircle the whole town and there are many interesting places to see and visit on the two mile route. It's well worth doing.

Despite it being a very rainy day, I enjoyed my anti-clockwise walk round the walls from Eastgate Clock - the northern and western sides of Chester especially. I felt this very manageable stroll to be very useful in putting the city in its historical and geographical context, some lovely views and informative boards too. Shame that two or three short sections were closed for repair, requiring a diversion to the street, but understandable.

We walked round the entire perimeter of the city, taking in beautiful views and impressive history. It was a shame that a couple of parts were sectioned-off for maintenance but it's worth preserving this amazing part of the city. The walk affords you views you would not get by road, and as you join the river you get an opportunity to sit and watch the world go by.

I imagine it gets very busy in Summer and might prove tricky for this with pushchairs etc. as some parts are narrow ( but not all!) We recommend anyone visiting Chester to walk the wall!

Your first stop should be the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall, where there is a range of really helpful guides produced by the staff costing £1 each. We bought one for The Walls, with a self-guided walk, which is two miles/3 km long. There are plenty of steps built into the wall where you can descend to investigate points of interest, such as the Cathedral and Roman amphitheatre. You can go at your own pace, and although there are places where you have to go up and down stairs, the walk is mostly on the level, with elevated views of the city and river. Chester has the longest and most complete city walls in Britain, with a history stretching back almost 2,000 years, so if you’re visiting the city, it’s a must-do activity.

A great way to see Chester. The 2 mile walk along the walls, Roman in origin, gives a fantastic birds eye view of the city & allows you to stop off a points of interest. We visited the Cathedral, Roman Amphitheatre, Roman Gardens, walked along the River Dee whilst taking in the hustle & bustle of the place. Absolutely free, although you can download a walking app for a few pounds or take a guided walk, led by a "Roman Legionnaire", which several school parties were thoroughly enjoying.

The walls are quite narrow in places and not too many people are social distancing so at times felt overcrowded.
There is also restoration work going on at present ,so found it tricky to walk all way round. They do have signposts but some areas not that easy to follow. You get a super view of the city and surrounding areas at the river Dee and canals . Worth the walk took about 40 minutes.

Running nearly two miles are the Chester City Walls which is an amazing insight into the influence of the Roman Empire on this historic walled city.
Beautifully well maintained walls which are superb to walk around ,take in the sites of the city and enjoy the amazing architecture, besides the wonderful Chester City Walls are the magnificent Roman Amphitheatre and the Roman Gardens which adds to the joy of exploring the walls and taking in the historically important Roman Walls and sites.
Most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a trip to Chester.

Visited July 2019 - Circular walk around Chester's City Walls, and is interesting to see various parts of the city including Roman remains, the River Dee and the Racecourse. At the time of the visit, a few sections were being repaired but is well worth spending time on an afternoon ambling around at one's pace. Also the well-known Eastgate clock forms part of the Walls walk.

Chester is a smaller version of York. The city walls were a gentle stroll with information boards at variuos locations describing the features and history. To get onto the walls there are various access points some inevitably with steps. A good way to get a perspective of the city and a taste of its history.

We were really looking forward to our walk around the wall on our recent visit to Chester. Unfortunately due to work on many parts of the wall you can’t currently make a circuit around the City. We enjoyed the bits you can walk but where it is closed signage to the alternative routes are poor or non existent.

We'd walked the walls many years ago so this time was a bit of a trek down memory lane but with teenagers in tow. The teenagers weren't that bothered by the walls, however us adults quite enjoyed the exercise and views. I personally was a bit disappointed at the amount of rubbish laying around the walls and stairwells, but other than that, there are lots of information boards at each junction and some lovely views of the surrounding area and the city.
