For building
Sep 2021 • Couples
Having been on a city tour of Chester this Art Deco old cinema was recommended to visit. This is a library study area, cinema and theatre I sure other things too but as a tourist it’s the building and ambiance we wanted to absorb. We walked in and it felt a bit “are we allowed “. However the chap that said the words “can I Help you” as we told him we wanted to look around, was really enthusiastic in his response and similar to Tim Dunn ( if you see one of his programs an excited 8 yr old boy in mans body) He made us smile as he described the building and it’s uses and made sure oh yes come in please. There is a restaurant leaning to Lebanese food. Good place to visit and a cup of tea.

Unwelcoming and uninclusive
Sep 2021 • Solo
I had tickets for a play at Storyhouse and when I contacted them in advance to check they could make allowances for my disability I was made to feel completely unwelcome, they even suggested I wasn't being genuine. I decided not to attend. They say they're inclusive but they're not

A brilliantly British night out- highly recommended
Aug 2021 • Friends
We had the pleasure of watching Pride and Prejudice at the open air theatre last night. It was well organised, with various people ordering drinks and pizza, nicely spaced out and felt safe from a covid perspective.
The performance was superb! The cast are very talented, turning their hands to all manor of instruments, singing, dancing and making us giggle. Even the rain didn’t put anyone off as we just pulled out blankets and rain macs.
What a brilliant way to return to watching live theatre - highly recommended and thanks to the cast and crew! 👏🏼

Most depressing kids play ever
Jul 2021
Pretty disgusted at Glyn Maxwell's Jungle Book production. Dominated by pathos, angst, solitude, and mania, almost entirely bereft of joy, this is not how to put on a play for children. Sad, the scene and setting is hard to mess up, but I saw a little girl opposite clutching her cuddly monkey throughout looking forlorn, as most of the children were. No surprise when according to the script humans are unequivocally evil, the average tempo of any music was a 60bpm death march, and there were two actual dialogues about death. Nihilism for toddlers, great. Our child had two nightmares the following night.
The stig of the dump was one of our favourite ever productions and a sweet memory. Swallows and Amazon's a close second. This will take a while to purge. I hope Story house have a look in the mirror and decide to delight children next year.

Heavy handed Covid police spoil comedy show
Jul 2021 • Friends
Visit to Chester Comedy Festival ruined by Covid police at Storyhouse. We complied with queuing, sanitising, temperature checks & bag search on arrival. Took drinks to our socially distanced aisle seats only to be pounced in by the irate young steward who informed us masks have to be worn at all times but can be lowered only to sip a drink (unlike in the cafe where they can be removed when sat down). He then proceeded to direct people past us on our row to access their seats (including a number of latecomers during the show) despite us pointing out the empty row in front they could have taken - no social distancing there) and three times squeezed past us to get to others in the theatre to tell them to put masks on, even calling for back up from a very burly & intimidating supervisor - totally spoilt the atmosphere for a comedy show. We complained but were told this was house rules and made clear on the website - it’s not clear. And we’d visited the venue twice previously this year without this heavy handed approach. Speaking to others on leaving none of us are keen to go here again until they ease up on their treatment of customers.

Great place all-round
Jul 2021
I often frequent storyhouse as I find it a great place to complete my university work. The atmosphere is relaxed (which definitely helps when stressed!), with lovely decor and a various genres of music playing in the kitchen. As for the library, this makes a perfect place to study if you prefer a bit of quiet. The cinema is great too and I have enjoyed several films here.

Excellent customer service by Spenser
Jul 2021
Today I visited Storyhouse, as I have done recently every day for the last week or so. I enjoy going there to drink coffee and read in the downstairs area, which is spacious and often plays Latin American music that acts as great background music without intruding too much.
Today I was my coffee by a wonderful member of staff called Spenser, who took the time to talk to me about what I was reading, what he is currently reading and the various ways one can improvise when in need of a bookmark. He´s a young man who has just completed his studies at Chester University and who clearly knows his stuff with regards to books, beverages and all things Chester. I just wanted to take the time to give some positive feedback where it´s merited. - Joe Hobson.

Don't Get Sick!
Jun 2021
I booked tickets to see a film on Friday 18th June. My friend became unwell on Thursday afternoon and by Friday was displaying Covid symptoms. I tried to call the Storyhouse and listened to the recorded message for almost 18 minutes. I decided to call in and the lady at the desk cancelled my tickets but told me she could not re-book at that time and said somebody would call within 10 minutes; this did not happen.
I subsequently received an email (the following day) stating I could not re-book as I had not given 48 hours notice. I asked for this to be escalated in the hope somebody would see sense and allow me to re-book but unfortunately the same entrenched response was received from the Head of Sales and Marketing.
I am well aware of how difficult times are and the financial impact businesses and charities have suffered, however there were seats still available on Friday so my cancellation did not cause any financial consequences. I was happy to pay the fee to re-book for another evening this week when very few seats have been booked.
It is utterly bewildering how an organisation cannot deviate from 'standard' policy in what are far from standard times. To penalise somebody for being responsible and not attending a performance with what could have been Covid is unbelievable and unreasonable. Perhaps the message is to come to the Storyhouse if you are unwell with the possible consequences of causing it to close which would have far more serious implications.
Rest assured, I will no longer support the Storyhouse until new management is in place who adopt a more sensible approach and are better equipped to promote good PR in the community.
