About
Visit the only museum of stained glass in the UK – with a national collection of stained glass from across Britain and Europe. The Stained Glass Museum’s collection spans more than 800 years, from the medieval period to the 21st century. Our museum is located in the upper levels of Ely Cathedral. Over 125 original stained glass windows from across the UK and Europe are displayed in our main gallery. Here, you can experience the art of stained glass up-close and enjoy a fascinating variety of images in both historic and modern styles from a range of religious and secular buildings. Our permanent gallery offers a unique insight into the fascinating history of stained glass. Temporary exhibitions and events are held throughout the year. The museum is family-friendly with an interactive lightbox, trails, activity and reading corner. Our well-stocked gift shop features a range of unique handmade glass art, books, gifts and jewellery.

We did wonder if it would be worth the extra admission fee but it definitely was. Access is via a stone spiral staircase and a traffic light system is in place to ensure you don’t cross others coming down the stairs. We spent well over an hour here. The panels are well set out starting with the 12th century through to modern day. A couple of short films are also available to watch the process of stained glass making.
You get some great views of the cathedral as an added bonus.
There’s a beautifully designed shop with some lovely pieces of hand crafted glass and other glass associated souvenirs most of which were not on sale in the main cathedral shop in the nave.

A lovely little museum with a lot to see. Beautiful examples of Stained Glass from it's beginning right through to the present day. I enjoyed it very much, but if you aren't into art, it might not be your thing.

Lovely stained glass to be seen plus explanations of making and artists. There are pieces to laugh over and also to marvel at.

What an excellent gem of a museum which whilst small has lots to see and lots to read about. We spent around an hour and a half in the museum which explains the different methods of creating stained glass windows, as well as showing some great examples.
If you are visiting the cathedral in Ely, it's well worth paying the extra to visit.

Whilst it isn’t very large it takes quite a while to visit as there is so much to look at and take in. There are some amazing examples covering a huge range of centuries. You also get a different view of a fair bit of the cathedral.

I was somewhat reluctantly persuaded by my wife to pay extra to visit this museum in the cathedral but as usual she was right. It is well structured Museum which educates you about stain glass manufacture then goes on to intrigue you with its gallery of stain glass moving through time.

Really enjoyed it.

Whilst visiting the cathedral we visited the stained glass museum and found it really interesting. Some great examples through the ages and the colours we striking.

They had good social distancing measures in place including a traffic light system for access and egress.

The kind lady at reception was very concerned that the steps up to the exhibition would prove too much for us, an unnecessary concern as it happens. It was a feast of colour and a most impressive demonstration of the development of the craft.

A very interesting collection of ancient and modern stained glass. Clear documentation explaining all the pieces. A good shop as well for cheap souvenirs to expensive collectors pieces.
