- PAUL B35 contributionsLearned A LotA generally well set out and extremely interesting house. Loads of new information about Cromwell and life at the time. Some display boards are tucked into awkward areas and the choice of some of the print colour on posters makes them hard to read. The audio guide is excellent.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2023
- Pamela JBenfleet, United Kingdom136 contributionsVery InterestingReally enjoyed our visit to the Oliver Cromwell house. It was very interesting and informative. Well laid out and lots of displays to look at. Also a lot of interactive things for children with some costumes available for dressing up. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area. It took us about an hour to walk round. There is also a small gift shop,Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023
- mjg3927London, United Kingdom35 contributionsAn interesting and thought-provoking insightLearnt so much from this small but very informative museum. Had always thought of Oliver Cromwell in a slightly negative light but didn't really know much about him and the exhibition definitely makes you think about his motives and actions, giving both sides of opinion and encouraging the visitor to decide for themselves. Lots of things for children too if you were going as a family.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 27, 2023
- Sue RStoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom56 contributionsGood value for moneyInteresting place, small but well preserved. Good write ups on the walls and a handset that gives additional information. Some activities for kids also. Takes no more than 1 hour and good value for money.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 31, 2023
- HalfyB178 contributionsAn excellent choice for a visit - very well presented and informativeFascinating and very well presented museum based in the house where Cromwell lived before the civil war. So many museums these days are so dumbed down as to be boring. This one has a very good balance between an overall story and the ability to dip into particular issues. There are good visuals and the printed information is easily read (not too small). You go round with a very informative audio guide which has options for finding out more aout some topics.Thank you for your feedback; it allows us to continually improve our visitor offering. - EnglandExpectsStockport, United Kingdom131 contributionsWell worth visitingExcellent. The house is in remarkable condition given its age and past use as a pub after Cromwell. A very informative tour contextualises his life and allows the visitor to conclude for themselves whether he was more good or bad.Thank you for your feedback; it allows us to continually improve our visitor offering. - LibrarianByDay5 contributionsFantastic fun at The Tomb of the Templars Escape RoomVisited to try the new Tomb of the Templars escape room with a mixed group of adults and children (ages 9-11). What a fantastic event - staff were helpful, enthusiastic and very much in character. The puzzles were innovative (no spoilers here!) and there were lots of great props. You have an hour to complete the Escape Room and we managed it with a minute to spare! The certificate and group photo were nice souvenirs of a fun morning - highly recommended, and we will definitely be back to try future games.Thank you for your feedback; it allows us to continually improve our visitor offering. - johnhouston2Knaresborough, United Kingdom5,381 contributionsPaints a good picture of Cromwell the man.Oliver Cromwell’s house now houses the town’s tourist information bureau, but you can also pay for a tour of the house, and the entry price includes an audio guide. It doesn’t take long to go round, but the exhibitions etc are well done and paint a good picture of the man. It also poses the question of whether Cromwell was a saint or a sinner. I’ve got mixed views myself!Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2024
- JSSAmberCambridge, United Kingdom684 contributionsSmall but memorableThe tickets are expensive for what is a small museum, but the experience itself is lots of fun. There's a good video at the beginning to welcome you, and the audio guides let you decide whether to skim the surface or go in-depth. It has obviously been designed by people both knowledgeable about and willing to be critical of the influential man, so your brain gets an enjoyable workout during the visit.Thank you for your feedback; it allows us to continually improve our visitor offering. We stopped at Ely on our return from a weekend break in Norfolk and were delighted to spend time visiting Oliver Cromwell's house as we didn't have time for a longer visit to the cathedral. It only takes around 45 minutes to see the whole of Cromwell's house and yet the price is very good value. There is a film at the beginning then an audio tour. There are also things for children to do in each room while the adults can brush up on their history knowledge by reading the boards also in each room, so suitable for all ages. We had the whole place to ourselves and I thought it was excellent and would like to return with grandchildren in the future.

Oliver Cromwell's house was directly opposite our Poets House Hotel and Restaurant and we were welcomed by enthusiastic and helpful staff who carried out the correct Covid measures.
With our information unit in hand my partner and I set off on the 45 minute tour (longer if you press the optional information buttons)
We found the tour very informative and the rooms really set the scene.
We highly recommend a visit

A very interesting place. £4.20 to go in inc. the audio guide. Watch the film first, move round the house pressing the button for the talk as you go according the room you are in - simple. Lots of extra bits to listen to about various aspects of Cromwellian & other history, if you have the time and/or are interested enough (we did and we were). The whole thing works really well and Cromwell is intriguing, whatever side of the debate you favour. In these strange times, you have to wear a mask and there is more hand sanitiser than anyone could ever need around the place but it works and didn't make me enjoy my visit any less. Staff are available at the beginning and the end if you need them.

The Oliver Cromwell House in Ely is a real treat to visit if you are a believer in the American Constitution, Tom Payne and the Rights of Man.
It shows a domestic side of life in the mid 17th Century just at the point when Cromwell became more than a Squire from the Fens but a Parliamentarian. The house is small but excellently curated (excluding one label which should have read anti royalist but missed out the anti) and the audio visual guide helps you get around. The house is not large so where did they put their large family?
The staff on the front desk were charming and helpful and the shop display allows you to buy Parliamentary Ale.
You should buy two bottle, one to drink as a warm ale the other to be chilled...both will serve as a reminder of his character and perseverance

This was an interesting visit. I was given a device which I operated in each room of the house as I went through it. It was not difficult as long as you do not forget the number of thr room you are in! There is a different commentary in each room with the possibility of expanding the commentary into various topics. The whole expereience was well designed and worked well. The overall theme was also excellent. The commentary tackled a tumulteous period of English history and presented it even-handedly It related the good part of the man but aso the bad leaving the listeners to decide themselves. As Cromwell himself said "warts and all". I thought it was a very worthwhile visit.

It is part and parcel of the Tourist Information Office or of course vice versa. You get an audio guide with admission that ties in well with the visual explanations in the various rooms. We certainly learnt some information about Cromwell that we were unaware of. It would have been nice to have some ‘reinactors’ as you went round as certain areas cry out for them.

We knew very little about Oliver Cromwell and this period in history before visiting the museum . We found it interesting, fascinating and well worth a visit. It was not expensive. On arrival you are given an audio set in a plastic bag which is very easy to use. You are given information in each toom and the option of pressing extra numbers for specific information on artefacts for instance.
Each room revealed even more... There was just about enough to read without being over powered. Certain games and artefacts had been removed , such as dressing up clothes during Covid pandemic but this didn't spoil our enjoyment.

A beautiful house cum museum with a souvenir gift shop as you enter/ exit.
Not wheelchair accessible unfortunately and there is enough here starting with a short 5 minute film to keep you occupied for about 30 minutes.....well worth the £5.20 entrance fee per adult.
A beautiful 16th century house.

They have managed to make this small house a very effective museum telling the story of Oliver Cromwell and this important period in British history. They it with a very simple but very effective individual audio presentation that takes you on a room by room tour of the house.

Oliver Cromwell's House in Ely is the only surviving home of the British "Lord Protector", he lived in it for ten years (1643-1653). It is a small museum which aims to recreate how Cromwell lived during this time, and does a pretty good job of it. This isn't a huge place, so it will not occupy visitors for much more than an hour. The audio guide you get at the front desk (UKP 6.50 for an adult ticket) is very helpful, make sure to use it. As you walk through the rooms you'll get a nice sense of the place and the history behind it, though the means of "immersion" and "interactivity" are very limited indeed. Most of the time you'll be listening to the audio guide or reading the info posters on the walls. A brief video at the start will give you some info on the man's life. Worth a visit if you're in Ely anyway (the marvellous Ely Cathedral) is just a short walk away). Also, make sure to have a quick look at Cromwell's community church, St. Mary', right next door.

As I'm a wheelchair user or can use crutches, am I able to see the majority of the house please?
Written August 3, 2016
Sorry for the late reply... You'd be fine with the downstairs of the house as far as I can remember, but I'm pretty sure there was no wheelchair access to the upper area... Probably best if you contact them to make sure.
Hope this helps!!
