- Cornflake50Bath, United Kingdom628 contributionsCome here for the burger midday dealThey offer a lunch time deal on burgers, second burger for a pound. And they are good burgers, made sure when ordering mine was fairly well cooked. Good chips. The place was very busy when we ate here midday as obviously everyone knows to take advantage of it. - Michael O2 contributionsExcellent Sunday lunch! Perfectly prepared and served by professional and friendly bar staff! We popped in for Sunday lunch on the off chance that we might get a table to be told the were completely booked up since two weeks prior to us walking in!! Very kind and polite gents behind the bar gave us a table for two anyway so were extremely greatful..... Ordered two Sunday roasts with the beef which was perfectly cooked, beautifully cooked roast potatoes and an unexpected side of cauliflower cheese that tasted fantastic! All that with a good Yorkshire as well. I highly recommend the Alex but would certainly advise booking if planning on going for Sunday lunch, my one criticism would be that they only allow you to book for parties of four or more which seems a bit unfair as not everyone is dinning in such large numbers and if you're a couple or, just with one other it makes it unlikely you will be able to get a table 🤔🙄 definitely needs a rethink guys!! 😁👍Hi Michael. Thanks for the review and we are glad you enjoyed your Sunday Roast! Last Sunday was very busy as it was the Cambridge half marathon and so gets very busy with people booking for after the run We want to still be a local pub rather than a restaurant so for bookings we make it 4 or more and we always keep some smaller tables available for walk-ins, as you discovered on your visit! - ElnaCambridge, United Kingdom117 contributionsLaidback and reasonably pricedWe chose this pub for lunch as it seems to be one of the only places offering more than just a roast on a Sunday. Managed to get a table straight away despite it being busy. I ordered the Celine Dion burger (beef patty with maple cured bacon and goat’s cheese) with skin on fries, while my friend had the lamb kofta. Both were delicious and came in really generous portions. Staff were also friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend this place for a laidback and reasonably priced meal.Just seen this lovely review Elna! Glad you enjoyed your visit and the food. - Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,388 contributionsAnother pub in this area with a good ale range.I cannot pass comment on the food as we were only here for a beer and in that respect it was a first time to visit for me as I usually restrict myself to one Greedy King pub maximum a day and that would be the nearby Free Press when in this part of town. However, it was on the recent Pubs Galore crawl running list so I dutifully entered my, god forbid, third Greene King pub of the day. Fortunately, in keeping with the others, this is another of the GK stable in Cambridge that supports a decent guest ale offering and five of the 8 pumps dotted around the bar were in operation with Wolf Brewery’s Mad Wolf, Milestone’s Cushty Peeve, GK Future Brewers’ Spring Break, Three Blind Mice Brewery’s Porterhouse Blues and Weston’s Rosie’s Pig Cloudy Cider and my Three Blind Mice Porter was very decent indeed. It is a nice looking pub from the outside but I wasn’t so keen on this one inside and the modern bare boarded space wasn’t really to my liking, especially the area with the bench seating which sported a wall papered wall that was conducive to headaches. And I’m not a great fan of being able to see the workers in the kitchen whilst I’m sitting there drinking. However, what I was very impressed with was the outside courtyard area at the back which was largely undercover and extremely well designed and laid out. If there was anything resembling a silver lining from the Pandemic it is that a lot of pubs now that their outside spaces as a feature rather than an afterthought. It’s a good pub but I still don’t think I would rush back to this one just for a beer, given what lurks nearby. Thanks' Steve for the review. Though Greene King badged, we are independently run and always strive to have an interesting selection of beers on tap and a decent range of keg and craft beers as well. Glad you discovered our garden and garden room area, our hidden treasure!Written April 25, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 17, 2024

Always the best burgers in town with great service and a friendly welcome.
If you're in on a Sunday, then Sunday lunch is also excellent.
I just keep coming back and coming back.
Tight range of well kept beers too.

Great pub - been there many times over the years and I seem to have been there more during the pub openings between the lockdowns than any other around Cambridge. The staff during the pandemic have been excellent, very strict but fair and the service has been very good. As always, the burgers have been lovely. Can't fault it really - great job guys.

1st a group of people had to be moved from our reserved table due to not putting a booked sign on it.
2nd we ordered three burgers, chicken wings and sweet potato chips. Chicken wings and chips were great. The burgers unfortunately were cooked pink (see pic) instead of medium as stated in the menu. We went up to the chef to ask if he could cook it properly and he refused.
So we had to bring them home and cook them further ourselves.

Sorry your visit fell short of our usual high standard.
A member of staff should have brought you your cutlery or at least pointed you to the dumb waiter where it was placed. It's no excuse but the day you visited is one of the busiest days of the year for us, Alexfest and we also had a member of staff off ill.
Our burgers are served medium-rare and we state that on the menu, though we have taken the feedback on board that the text could be more prominent which we will address on the next print run.
Chef was right in that he could not place back on the griddle a partly eaten burger due to hygiene reasons but said they could be replaced with fresh ones cooked well done and directed you to the bar to speak to a member of staff.
You asked for take-out boxes though rather than replacements as said you would take them home to re-cook.
Obviously re-heated would impair the quality and never be as good as freshly cooked but we are surprised by your description of 'grizzle', as they are made of lean beef steak from the local butchers.
I'm sorry our service fell short in this instance. Maybe we did not communicate it well, but we would have been more than happy to replace the burgers or refund you at the time.

This place was near to where we were staying in the city so we called in for lunch. Premises is very Covid secure, Friendly staff from the get-go. Great little beer garden. Ordering by app was quick and easy to follow. Staff came to check that there hadn;t been any problems with ordering. We'd all ordered burgers - there was no delay and the food was fabulous. We would recommend this pub to others.

This place is a bit offset (although not more than 3 minutes away from a main street) but it’s authentic and quiet, and everyone, from the staff to the customers, is extremely nice and generous. And the food is homemade under your eyes and delicious.
A perfect, flawless experience as we stopped there for lunch as a family of 5.
Will definitely return.

This pub has changed hands almost every two years and "Greedy King" have struggled to get people to run it. The last landlord at least managed to negotiate a beer price similar to the other pubs in the area.
The pub is friendly and has had a facelift since we last went in. Busy weekend evening when we went in recently.
The bar staff leave a lot to be desired. They gave me the wrong drink twice and gave me a look that said, it was my fault! They need some training!
£9.20 for an average pint of Buntingford and a 175ml glass of wine is £2 over the odds. The food looks good but the prices are again high. Good luck to them but the local Cambridge Blue, Geldart and Kingston Arms offer better fare for much less!! Pity as l liked the place.

Having lived locally for 7 years, the Alex is by my reckoning into its fourth incarnation in that time. And thankfully those over-seeing the latest re-launch have had the good sense to give the area something it didn’t already have, putting its focus on ‘burgers, brews & banter’. So taking those one at a time ...
Burgers: an essentially simple dish but very easy to get wrong; cheap and/or pre-prepared ingredients being the standard error. The Alex did not disappoint. The burger itself was cooked to order and as requested (medium in my case), and was well-seasoned. A side of fries were reassuringly irregularly cut rather than bulk-bought & frozen. We benefitted from a 2-for-1 deal on the burgers but they are easily worth the full price and justify a visit on their own.
Brews: the Alex is a Greene King pub but the brewery does seem to allow it to go off-piste. In an area dominated by independent pubs and a strong real ale bias this is a wise decision (and incidentally that freedom extends to the decor, and the new incumbents have taken great care to give the Alex a bit of character). I only had a cursory look at the numerous taps before going with a bottle of Brooklyn Lager (it was lunchtime and a session wasn’t an option ...). There’s a touch of the craft beer aspect to the brews which I guess will see some rotation for future visits and keep things fresh.
Banter: naturally some of this comes down to the company you keep! Having been greeted on arrival by the new landlord, Ed, he’s more than capable of keeping his part of the bargain. Subsequent punters were equally well received. The last landlord would occasionally tweet negatively about customers but early signs here are of a far more astute approach to social media which also reflects Ed’s positive character.
It’s been great to see this place busy when I’ve reluctantly walked past of an evening and look forward to popping in again. Welcome to the neighbourhood guys!
