St Catharine's is the one of the colleges of Cambridge to have been founded by the serving head of another college, Robert Woodlark, for reasons that are not entirely clear. He stipulated that the fellows would only study theology and philosophy, so maybe that was the reason. Architecturally, the quadrangle is notable for being an open court, with three sides of renaissance style buildings and one side gated on Trumpington Street.

Beautiful college, full of wonderful history and gorgeous architechture. I loved visiting it! It's location next to King's College makes the two ideal consecutive visits.

it looks oddly unfinished. Very odd feel to the place - but I love it! If one was honest, it's one of the uglier Oxbridge colleges - only Sidney Sussex here - or Balliol College at Oxford - are more plain. But that's what's great - variety. I suspect the rebuilding in the 17th/18th century was a disaster - and the red brick is depressing. Hey ho. Old boys include the Zodiac, Elton John and Sir Max "Tubby" Whinnit - pioneer explorer of the Congo (the last Englishman to be completely eaten by cannibals).

Not luxury accommodation but I had a sparklingly clean room with en suite, overlooking the Main Street (a bit noisy but decent blackout curtains meant I slept well).

A hearty breakfast, delightful quad, and a comfortable bed in a centrally located college, ideal for a short break.

The porters were exceptionally pleasant and set the scene for a stress free stay.

I didn't need to venture far but it's worth the slightly longer walk to get to the Botanical gardens.

Definitely worth a visit (and a return visit).

The buildings are old, but the rooms are of a good size. Last year I had one with en-suite bathroom, but opted for the cheaper option this year with shared bathroom. It was not a problem as it seemed to be only 3 rooms per bathroom and there is a sink in the room as well. There is tea and coffee facility in the room and you get a small bag of toiletries. Breakfast is included in the price and it was a decent spread. No ham or cheese, but you have cooked breakfast, cereals, fresh fruit, toasts and some pastries. Can't complain for that price.

I first stayed there in 2010 and got a well furbished ensuite room in the new building. This year we got a more traditional room overlooking the amazing Quenn's Lane and though the room was fine and really enjoyed the breakfast in the "Great Hall" we had a shared bathroom with 4 other rooms which was kind of unexpected (we should have checked the booking better). The location is superb and the atmosphere is really what you are looking for if in Cambridge.

Very clean & comfortable guest rooms, set in the heart of the city. Everything was a couple of minutes walk away.

Really large spacious room & bath. Good hot breakfast, free wifi and friendly staff. What more could you want?

One of the top three must see sites of Cambridge. Long hidden, and one of the most photographed attractions in Cambridge. Its Cafe and Bar open to public, 8-10:30 breakfast, then cafe till 4:30, bar starts at 6:30-10:30pm.

Booked to stay here for 2 nights whilst in Cambridge for a boys weekend. The location is great, so close to all the attractions and with the river just down the road. Breakfast was of a good standard and the rooms were fine. Would recommend going for the en-suite rooms though, we didn't and only had 1 toilet between 10 rooms and one shower room, made getting ready to go out a bit of a timing challenge! The free wifi is a good extra.

Would certainly look to stay here again if heading back to Cambridge.

We stayed one night at St Catherine's College. It's good for the experience of staying in an old heritage college - you can have dinner and breakfast in the dinning hall in college student style. A way to experience college lifestyle without the exams ;-)
The room itself is clean and sufficient - nothing fancy, certainly not a 4/5-star hotel standard. I probably wouldnt stay there frequently, but it's good for the experience.
