About
We're Bristol's only dedicated board game cafe. We have over 700 games and helpful staff who can find the right ones for you and your group. They can even set the board up and teach you the rules too! Besides the games we're a fully licenced bar-cafe, with an all-day food menu, speciality coffee and tea, craft beers and fine wines. It's £5 per person for a four-hour gaming session.

Cozy ambience. Great Mocha!
Sep 2020 • Solo
Visited Chance & Counters and was pleasantly surprised. Location is right on Christmas steps and has that cozy feeling. Very clean. Local staff with friendly faces. I ordered a Mocha coffee. Just the right temperature so didn’t scold the roof of my mouth. Prices were average. Would recommend.

Great way to spend an evening!
Jan 2020 • Friends
Had an unexpectedly fab night here during a business trip. After stopping in for a trial, we booked ourselves in for the next night. Staff were friendly, food was great, vegan options, good beer. Really fun way to spend a night. I will definately return!

Chance encounter
Aug 2019 • Couples
We were looking for somewhere to have a drink and came across Chance & Counters. They serve the most delicious milkshakes and I can recommend the Dime one. It has a really good vibe and the board games are really popular. A great place to visit especially if you like board games.

Great afternoon
Jul 2019 • Friends
Visited yesterday, not too busy at all, shown to a nice roomy table. Snacks and cocktails great, played about 8 different games and had a really enjoyable afternoon. Only improvement could be more classic games - lots of choice of strategy heavy, serious games but we would've liked to play kerplunk, mouse trap, buckaroo, frustration etc.

Birthday treat
Mar 2019 • Couples
I bought my wife here on her birthday and we had a great time. Service was friendly and helpful and there were plenty of choices to play. It was lovely to be away from damned computer screens! Very enjoyable and we’ll certainly be back to try another game or ten!

Brunch with board games
Feb 2019 • Family
When we popped in on Saturday afternoon it was fully booked but they suggested booking a table for the following morning. So we ended up doing Sunday brunch surrounded by hundreds of games, most of which we had never heard of!
Whilst the boys perused the menu, I perused the games library. Thankfully there was an incredibly knowledgeable games guru to assist with game choice, set-up, and rules
We played Carcassonne twice, then Catan - neither of which we had ever even heard of! We were hooked!
Coffee, tea, smoothies, bruschetta, and toasties kept us fuelled throughout our session which flew by.
Later that day we returned to buy our very own brand new copy of Catan to play after supper back in our accommodation.

Family Night Fun!!!
Nov 2018 • Family
I realised it was my turn to organise family night on Wednesday at 7pm and panicked! Suddenly, I remembered a friend recommending a board game café. My son absolutely loves board games but when at home there are so many distractions so going out to play them seemed like a good idea. I rang up to book and the man on the phone could not have been more helpful. Sadly they were fully booked Friday and Saturday night from 6pm but perhaps they could accommodate us on Saturday morning? This turned out to be an excellent idea. Nestled at the foot of the Christmas steps, this place is out of the way enough to avoid drunken revellers and we were thrilled with the food and game options available. We turned up before they opened but they let us come in anyway - absolutely LOVE good customer service. The décor is cosy, long wooden tables and comfortable chairs, quirky gamer-inspired art on the walls, low lighting and Louis Armstrong made this a fantastic start to the weekend after a very stressful week. The games are organised in library shelves opposite the serving counter in an easy to view fashion. The food was fantastic we had Asian chicken wings, sweet potato falafel with apple slaw wrap (delicious), delicious banana milkshake, giant cookies and teas and coffees. The menu had options for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. Service was friendly and efficient.
The game options were plentiful and enticing. My son wanted to play Smallworld and they had it. We then wanted a short game as we were going to run out of time so we asked a member of staff who was on hand with game knowledge to recommend something. As we sat at our table tidying up our first game he came bounding back with 3 options - one based on a game I'd been recommended by a friend but sadly was a better game with 4 rather than 3 players, one which had a very enticing premise and is now on my to play list for next time and a cute Japanese inspired card point scoring game. I love it when people so obviously take pride in their jobs and with this place all the staff were lovely. The atmosphere was fun, laid back and playful. We arrived at 10am and by 10.30 it was really buzzing.
We will definitely be going back and I highly recommend it for a night out with friends, date night with your special, a place to catch up with someone you haven't seen in a while and definitely a great option to take children probably aged 7 and over as it is a place to sit, chill and play NOT run around! £5 per person seems reasonable for a chance to sit and play a plethora of games in a relaxed atmosphere. Next time, I'm coming with some adult friends in the evening as they also serve alcohol including cocktails. To add, I am not a gamer but felt vey welcome and at ease here. It has inspired me to play more games - the world is bigger than Monopoly!

if you like Boardgames this place is awesome!!
Mar 2018 • Friends
for anyone who has a fondness for playing boardgames with friends and family this place is brilliant. They have such a huge selection of games that include casual and fun party games to more indepth "nerdy" games and from 2 player up to large groups. The staff are all really lovely and helpful and what i have really enjoyed is asking them to suggest games that they like which are similar to what i've played before. Doing this has introduced me to several new games, some of which i have now bought for myself.
