Un unexpected pearl in Brittany countryside
Jun 2019 • Couples
The parish close at Guimiliau is something special. This part of Brittany is known for its peculiar calvaries, but this one is the most elaborate one and more than 400 years old. It is located along the route between St.Malo and Brest, but you have to leave the main road and drive along a country road parallel to it. The entire complex at Guimiliau is built of local stone which is very dark, so that the buildings look somewhat sinister. But you have to step closer and admire the precise carving work. There is an arch at the entrance, followed by a marvellous calvary with a unique octagonal shape. The calvary scenes are shown all around it in form of reliefs and statues. There is also an ossiary and a church with a beautiful bell tower.
The village is a quiet one, there is a grocery shop and a cafe.
The neighbouring villages also have calvaries, for example Lampaul, where the calvary is represented by a cross and a group of statues around it.

Fantastic!

Beautiful ensemble, cannot be recommended enough to be visited.
Village is very quiet, not spoiled by too many tourists who cannot behave themselves.

Fascinating

Wonderful carvings on the 16th century Calvary. The church itself is rather austere but has a marvellous panelled vaulted ceiling and beautiful carved columns supporting the Baptistery canopy.

Magical

Guimiliau and the other enclos nearby alone are worth a trip to Brittany. The site, church, calvaire, enclos is stunningly beautiful. The proportions are just perfect.

Typical Breton art
Jun 2017 • Business
One of the several encloses, so named because the local churches were enclosed by a low wall and invariably contain a calvary. Most were built during the Contrareformation. Protestantism was never a strong force in Brittany but the Contrareformation swept trough here with a recristening and rekindling of the faith and most churches and artwork are in the Baroque style. Altough it is a baroque style it is quite naieve folk art, not to be compared to the great Baroque oeuvre of Italy and the Southern Netherlands or with the Northern Protestant Palladium but charming in its own right.

Astonishing calvary
May 2017 • Couples
Perhaps the most amazing thing about this Parish Close is the vast number of statues decorating the calvary. I lost count at around one hundred. Many have similar faces but there are some very quirky ones too. The interior of the church is less ornate than the one at St Tregonnec, but it's well worth a visit. Of the Closes we visited this was the only one to have a graveyard in current use.

Amazing Place to Visit
Sep 2016 • Business
This parish enclose is a work of art (lots of art). It is really amazing. Set in a lovely little village in a very pretty area. We ate lunch under the church portico while a fall shower passed through and studied the statues in great detail. The calvary out front is huge, well preserved and with so much detail. There are carvings in the rocks that have a mayan appearance to them. Inside the church is simple but lots of ornate wood work, big alter. Wish we had more time, we took lots of pictures and even they are still fun to look at!

Worth a journey to see - hands down beautiful
Jun 2015 • Friends
The enclos is a work of art, literally. While typical of this style of architecture and epoch, it is beautifully done and worth a journey to tour the church and enclos. As other reviewers have noted, it is a historic site, well maintained, and extremely memorable. We were very fortunate to tour the site.

Amazing art out of nowhere
Jul 2015 • Family
I did not know what an enclos paroissial (parish close) was until I came across it at this fantastic place. Now I am a lot wiser. If you have never seen it before this church in Guimilliau is the best place to experience the unique Breton16 century religious stone sculpturing art. A rather small church with a fantastic atmosphere, beautiful interior decoration. In addition the church is located in a small village, slightly off the track. It is certainly worth a large detour.
