The Castle of Jehay is located in the village of Amay. Te castle, built of limestone and brown sandstone, was founded in the 11th century, but the building mostly dates from the 16th century.
From the year of 1720 the Castle of Jehay was owned by the Van den Steen family. The last owner, Count Guy van den Steen, left it to the province of Liège after his death in 1999. Various sculptures can be seen in the beautiful gardens.
Very much worth a visit!

Tucked into the countryside outside of Liege is this little castle complete with moat and ancient graveyard behind the chapel. Unique black and white stonework adorne the outside walls. The recently deceased lord was an artist with very bizarre taste which is reflected in his bronze statues around the courtyard of nudes with insects (I did mention bizarre didn't I?). A good hour is enough but worth the jaunt out of town.

The castle was inherited by Jehan Holmant deSart and in 1492, Jehanne deSart, Holmant's daughter, married Arnold de Merode. For more than two centuries the castle remained in the hands of this family whose members were the main restorers. In 1680, de Merode sold the castle to Francois de Gand-Vilain van den Steen, Baron of Saive and "grand Mayeur de Liege". In 1998, while researching my Desart family history, my wife Martha and I met the Count Guy van den Steen, who gave us a tour of the grounds. He pointed out each of the weathered bronze statues he sculpted and related the history of the property. We were fortunate to be able to take numerous photos of the Count and the castle. We shall forever remember the pleasure of meeting Count Guy van den Steen and these momentos as we continue to research the Desart family in hopes of connecting our family from Liege, to his.

Great castle gardens and views, lovely sculptures all around, beautiful and well-maintained lawns and vegetables garden. Aquaducts not working what was pitty and not well maintained neither. Free entrance every first Sunday of the month. Unfortunately the castle itself, the front garden and the water around it was all closed because of renovation works. The best views of the castle were all hidden and you could not enter the castle. We made reservation online as for Covid-regulations but no checking point at entrance or whatsoever. No mentioning of those renovation works on their website, nor during the reservation process, no end dates of the works on the location itself. Otherwise this castle deserved 4 stars. Walloon government needs better communication.

As a Belgium local tour guide I recently got a request from 2 american ladies for a "castle tour". They were very much interested by a visit to the castle of Jehay. However, the "season" was off and the castle was only open for groups upon reservation at this time of the year. I still sent an email to Jehay and explained these 2 ladies came all the way from Maryland to visit the beautiful Ardennes region. So they opened the castle on a Sunday morning just only for the 3 of us! It was fantastic; nobody in the gardens, no one in the castle, a beautiful sunny day .... The castle is a unique example of local Renaissance style from the 16th century. It houses splendid collections of furniture, silver and gold plate, lace, china and tapestry. The wonderful chequered façade is a mixture of white and grey stones, unique in Europe. When you cross the moats, you access the wonderful gardens including paths, arbours and fountains waterfalls and fantastic sculptures (nymphs). An absolute must!

What a beautiful castle setting. The main part was under construction, so it was closed. But strolling around the castle grounds was worthwhile. There are interesting sculptures all over. They show a movie about the history that it very informative. There was also an art exhibit, which we didn't visit, though. If you have an afternoon to spare I recommend visiting this place.

Of course there may be a more beautiful castle in Belgium, but if it is, I surely missed it. This one in Jehay has every possible shape, harmoniously combined under a spotted facade. You can photograph half of it without an entrance fee and for the other angles there is a 5 euros fee which provides access to a quite original garden with many bronze statues of a couple of young ladies, some allegoric and some realistic, even if a bit smaller than the original size.

I wanted to visit this Castle for the second time so I called them to ask whether the Chateau would be opened during labor day. The person who answered the phone told me that the Chateau would be opened as it was Sunday. It took us one hour to reach the Chateau, to find out that it was closed. What it was more surprising is the fact that in the door there is a precise warning that the Chateau would be closed during labor day. There are two options: 1) they on purpose told me a wrong information or 2)they are simply incompetent. We went using public transportation so we had to wait one hour and half to catch the next bus. To say that I was angry this is an understatement. It is sad, because the Chateau is nice but I do not think I would be back.

The approach to the chateau and the moat makes for glorious photos. There are a few rooms to view which have so much history inside them and I would recommend the headset to hear the tour (all downstiars rooms so idea for those with limited mobility). The places just oozes history.
Try to go on a summy day as the outside is the best bit, I can;t put my finger on why but just wandering around the gardens (and make sure you pop into the walled garden over to the left) was peaceful, intriguing and looking back at the chateau I got some great photos.
I don't recall a cafe . . . but perhaps we missed it . . .

This is a fantastic looking castle and church, surrounded by a moat. Really stunning.
The gardens are beautiful as well.
The exterior is very impressive, the interior is nice but in a poor state.
