We booked a trip from Schipol airport during a long transit at Amsterdam. Originally, we booked a 2.5 hour city tour. When the tour guide appeared (named Hank), he said that many of the streets in the city centre were blocked off for a celebration, so he suggested that we do the city and canal cruise. So, instead of paying 45 euros each, we paid another 10 euros each for the combined tour (3.5 hours). We were worried about the length of the tour, as we had to be back to catch our flight, but he re-assured us that all would be OK. So, at about 3.15pm (the tour was supposed to start at 3pm), we left for the city. There was a stop at a clog and cheese factory (although he seemed to want us to miss it) which was quite interesting and some countryside views of windmills and canals. However, once in the city centre, he was not particularly informative. In fact, we passed the Rijksmusuem and we had to ask him what the building was. He then finished with us by 4.45pm by the train station (and the roads did not particularly looked blocked) and told us to wait for the 5pm canal cruise. So we had a 1.5 hour "city" tour in which we did not see much of the city. Definitely NOT worth 45 euros. The canal cruise was fine, the driver and the audio guide were informative and it was nice cruising on the canals, although it got a bit chilly once the sun went in. It was supposed to be an hour and it lasted just over that, so that was good. Again, on the way back to the airport, we did not see any roads blocked off, so we wondered whether our first guide just wanted to get rid of us quickly.
