Bei Shan National Park
May 2013
This is my favorite place I visited while in Qinghai. The mountains are valleys are beautiful, and the drive there was spectacular. The people around Bei Shan are mostly Tibetan, and very nice and welcoming. There are two different roads/entrances for the park, one is Langshidang, and the other is Zhalonggou. Langshidang is the more developed area, with more tourists - especially lots of Chinese tourists, as there is hotel (with a large new addition being built now) when you turn onto the Weibei Hwy/road to drive up into the park. The way up this entrance you will see many tourist lodgings/guesthouses, little restaurants, and even a place to shoot rifles for a fee. There is a lot of construction going on up this road, as it seems to be the more prominent tourist destination in BeiShan. At the end of the pavement for this road, it looks like it maybe continues up the valley more if you had a good 4WD. Zhalonggou is a little more remote and quiet, with a cool small Buddhist temple (Zha Long Temple) on the way up the valley, on the Zhalv Hwy/road. There is not much for tourist attractions up this way, but lots of pretty farm compounds with cattle, yaks, and such. You will pass through a small Tibetan village on the way up, a little before Zha Long Temple. At the very end of the Zhalv hwy/road there is waterfall parking area and some bathroom facilities. We drove into both entrances at night, and the gates were both open, and no fee had to be paid. During the daytime, depending on the season, they will be controlling the gates and admission. I recommend visiting Tian Tong "Heaven City", which is north of Langshidang on hwy. 302. Also visit the Zha Long temple which is off of the Zhalv hwy/road as you travel into the park from the Zhalonggou entrance. We found places to tent camp at both places, and can read more about our camping experience in Beishan in my forum post under "Camping in Qinghai" on Tripadvisor. Locations and Driving directions to the park are here (Search BeiShan National Park on Google Maps): Langshidang: https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?vpsrc=6&ctz=240&abauth=51a077b53b7cMzvK2iAP_gJq1bY4n-rKcKw&vps=1&num=10&mid=1369471257 Zhalonggou: https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?vpsrc=6&ctz=240&abauth=51a077b53b7cMzvK2iAP_gJq1bY4n-rKcKw&vps=1&num=10&mid=1369471257 Make sure to take the new highway to Huzhu, and then the new road over the mountains to the Beishan area. It only takes 1.5-2 hours instead of the 4+ hours that Google Maps will tell you. Do not go back east on the G6 and then north from Minhe on the 301 - the 301 is terrible right now. The picture posted by the other reviewer (Chinese review), I think is not from Beishan, but looks like Kanbula or somewhere else.

Excellent overnight trip from Xining
Apr 2012 • Family
The mountains (and forest) are beautiful, as is the drive from Xining. Great streams/rivers, woodlands, scenic stops, etc. Several overnight options, too. About 2.5 hours drive northeast from Xining, near border with Gansu province.
