This bronze foundry and gallery is one of Cochrane’s hidden gems. Don Begg has been an international award winning professional sculptor for half a century. Visitors always seem to be welcome and are treated to a very informative tour of the showroom and sometimes a view of bronzes in progress depending on whether the work in progress is public or confidential. Wife Shirley Begg was our guide and we spent a delightful hour learning the bronze processes and feasting our eyes on the variety of bronze works in the studio. They range from very small to probably fifteen to twenty feet. Shirley is a bronze sculptor as well and her excellent work is also on display. She was so welcoming you leave feeling you have a new friend. On historic Main Street (1st street) is a statue commonly known as The Chicken Lady She is a pioneer lady surrounded by her chickens and the eggs gathered are folded in her apron. A wonderful tribute to all farm women who contributed so much to our history of homesteading the land under primitive conditions. There are other Begg’s statues in the town and hundreds of statues across North America and five continents. Make sure to take a brochure at the studio to understand the vast collection that has come from this this modest studio in this historic town of Cochrane.

While visiting family in Cochrane, we requested a tour of the foundry and gallery. We were greeted by the absent artist's wife who patiently described and demonstrated the bronze casting process, and then showed us around the foundry, where we saw a number of works in progress. The detail in the works was most impressive. Our host provided us with anecdotes about many of the pieces. After the foundry we were shown around the gallery where we were treated to the intricacies of the sculptures on display. Items were available for purchase but there was no expectation to buy. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative tour.

If you are seeking authentic, incredible Western Art, this is the place to go. We loved our time meeting the artist and seeing the studio. We purchased three bronzes that will be family treasures forever. The showroom is like a museum. Mr. Begg is a very talented bronze artist!!

This was in the top ratings for Cochrane so we decided to take the tour. We were the only ones there for the tour so we got a lot of one on one. It was so interesting learning about the bronze process. We really enjoyed it and even saw one of the bronze statues in downtown Cochrane. Very cool!

If and when you visit Cochrane Albert you MUST stop in at the Studio West foundry. If you enjoy sculptures, especially bronzes in the Remington tradition then this stop is for you. You can see some of their work at various locations around town, but for the true experience you have to go to the source. So when in Cochrane make the time to visit the Foundry and "ENJOY"!!
