These fortress-like earth buildings were built to protect the residents from bandits years ago. Very smart and innovative designs even with a special communication system through the thick walls. We were taken there by our private tour guide after a long drive from Xiamen on a rainy day but another local guide took over and gave us a thorough tour of the area. Seeing these tu-lou was one of the reasons we visited Xiamen. Well worth the trip!

The reason for the design and architecture is really interesting to know. How the people of the past designed and built this magnificent structure is really fascinating. The tour guide there is really knowledgable and knows how to explain the structure. Suitable for all age as long as one is able to walk. There are some stairs to climb in the building. The only thing is it is quite remote. Hence, the bus ride is inevitable, but worth it.

Eryi Lou of the largest and best preserved Tulou of the Dadi Tulou cluster which is in Dadi Village. Built in 1770, it consists of a four storey outer ring and a one storey inner ring. The outer ring is 71 meters in diameter and each level has 48 rooms. This tulou has no circular corridor at the front of each upper level, instead it has a back corridor around the outer circle of the wall. The outer ring rooms are partitioned vertically into separate households, each with its own staircase. Some households have a width of 3 rooms, some a width of 4 rooms. Some of the rooms have been converted into stores and shops selling tea, mushrooms, souvenirs and other produce like nuts and dates. Most of the inhabitants are more into tourism than farming. Farmhouses and vegetable plots dot the countryside around the Tulou. It was an interesting visit.

Eryi Lou is the bigger round one and the biggest of the three tulou in Dadi. You can also read my review of the three tulou under the heading of "Hua'an Tulou Museum" here. Once my group tour reached the site, there was a local guide who showed us around. Went up to the top floor; formerly "apartments" of the Hakka people but now mostly shops selling antiques, tea and souvenirs for tourists. Its unusual features were highlighted and labelled in English and we saw a room with an altar and another with a wall painted. The wells in the big circular courtyard were shaped in plan like old Chinese coins for wealth. Certainly worth a visit if you have never been to a tulou.
