Far from the Maddening Crowd
Nov 2017
This resort is built by the owner of Thai Airways. It not only serves as a transit hotel for Sukhotai Airport, it is also a great place to learn about Thai agricultural practices and farming. It gives the individual tourist a break from the sweltering heat and crowds of Bangkok. Best place for reflection and yoga. Great for families too. It is educational tourism at its best. Kids will love to wake up early in the morning to collect duck eggs from their coop and even get an opportunity to have a photo op with a buffalo. Please sign up for the morning guided tour as it is very educational. All food served at the resort is produced within the farm itself.

What an experience

Prior to this the idea hadn't really been sold to me but once we had eaten amazing food and took a tour around the estate (which is owned by the owner of Bangkok airline) stopping off at the vast orchid house and seeing his pet lion, getting into native rice planters clothes started to feel ok. Although thought of racial stereo types were thought of as we donned the hat actually planting rice was fun. We didn't get to use the water buffalo, which after seeing them, I was pleased about. A unique experience that really shouldnt be missed if you get the chance.

Excellent place to follow the Old Town Temples

Give yourselves several treats in one; great food for lunch, before a tour of the organic farm on the back of a local farm tractor. Plant nursery, water buffalo sanctuary, fruit farm, ducks raised for eggs and then living out the rest of their natural lives after egg production ended, and different types of organic rice production, milling and extraordinary quality control (BY Hand) from a small team of women. Guide Oy was the perfect host, if you agree with me, at the end of the tour do say thank you in a meaningful way (pecuniary), to those that don't usually receive or expect such thanks. Well done Bangkok Airways for such great support of local people.

Awesome initiative

We had a great time when we visited the project for the 3 hour tour.

They organised this for us on the day and went to the extra trouble of ensuring that we were provided a translator as it is still more aimed at thai people. But don't let this stop you from taking a look.

We started with a colourful lunch and flavors that are more foreign to us on NZ.

During the tour we visited the airport (which have giraffes!!!!), the more recent addition of the orchard and vege garden, the rice paddies, the rice mill, learnt to make flowers out of banana leaves, and learnt about what makes the project so forward thinking.

We enjoyed getting dirty with the rice planting and field/paddy preparation knee high in mud doing it the traditional way.

Something that isn't over run by tourists but adds real merit to our thailand experience.

Budget time if you're going to the airport anyway

I'm sorry to be negative...I was expecting to love it...there are lots of factors, like they were under renovation while I was there, the staff were expecting a visit from a group at the time so they didn't pay any attention to me...and mainly, as a horticulture student I have already been to many amazing farms and research stations, so I am jaded and this one was not interesting to me. I was hoping to see fruit trees or learn more about vermiculture, but did not score on either of those. I didn't arrive at meal time so didn't try the excellent organic food others raved about. Visit if you have time and you haven't already seen other Thai farms/agricultural projects

Not what is advertised

The experience did not feel authentic in any way. It was not an "outdoor course" but instead, just a tour. They make you put on a "farmers uniform" which is funny but totally unnecessary.

I feel bad leaving a poor review because the people were so nice and the good intention is there. I expected to actually be put to work and spend a day like a true worker but it was more like the disneyland effect.

"Water buffalo riding" was more like water buffalo sitting while they ate their food on top of concrete under a roof.

I'd recommend this for people age 50+ or maybe families with young children. Not for backpackers or thrill seekers. We thought we'd have an off the beaten path experience but it didn't feel that way at all.

The lunch, however, was delicious and beautiful. Great fresh ingredients and unique dishes (and a ton of food).

I wish the project the best of luck in continuing to improve their tourist experience.

We were staying up the road at the Heritage resort and took bicycles out to explore. This project is really well put together, staff are friendly and welcoming the project is well explained and beautifully laid out. We had a fabulous lunch in the cafe overlooking the rice paddies and gardens. We have travelled extensively in Asia and can confidently say that the rice here is the best we have ever tasted.

I have never visited a place like this one before! It´s one of the best experiences of my life! We were here as journalists but they do the same service for tourists... There are amazing people working on this project, you can try on your own what it takes to be a Thai farmer - I worked on a rice field, sat on a buffalo and cooked Thai food - and then ate it :) There is also amazing shop where I bought around 5kg of very special organic rice and took it home. Its the best rice I have ever tasted. Everything is 100% organic and the stuff will guide you around the whole farm and explain everything... If you go to Sukhothai, don´t miss this!

famous Bangkok Airways project next to lovely Sukhothai airport
Dec 2014 • Couples
They say you should take the plane from Bangkok (2 a day) to land in this beautiful countryside: From the plane you see the herd of white buffaloes and the beautiful special grass all over.
The airport is like a miniature museum.
About two kms from the airport is the organic project where you can study everything about organic agriculture in a museum - explanations in English!
You can even spend half a day working in the rice fields and learn how to do it.
