What a wonderful place!
We stumbled upon Chateau Nitray, on a walk through the beautiful countryside along the river Cher.
We turned up with no booking, and in search of an Oasis in the hot Loire sun.
We walked into a lovely quiet count yard, to be warmly greeted by Francois - third generation owners of the beautiful Chateau.
We sat in the shade, overlooking the Chateau. Francois recommended their organic cot, which was absolutely delicious. We had to buy a few bottles before we left, we could not resist!
We had a delicious charcuterie board of local cheeses, and meats with fresh warm baguette. Then a platter of lovely deserts.
The Chateau is beautiful, with high ceilings and stone walls. The staff were knowledgable and friendly. Absolutely brilliant experience. Thank you for accommodating us, and our very bad French!
Also Auberlina (dog) was an extra delight for us.

We took a day trip from Paris to the Loire region. Chateau Nitray was the smallest, yet most memorable, part of our tour. We enjoyed our host and the details of his history very much. I’ve read over and over about lunch — roasted chicken, tomatoes, potatoes, bread and cheese — if you’re doing something right, why change? Lunch was delicious as the wine. I would highly recommend this tour.

The proprietor/wine maker, Francois was welcoming and friendly, liberal with the wine pouring, and gave us a tour around the grounds. The wines were organic, variable in type and very good. Explanation about the very old pigeon coop (manure used as fertilizer) was an interesting addition tour.

If you like to do a wine tasting at a small location or having a wedding this may be a place for you. Visiting a chateau is not happening. It is a private place where people live. The garden is a place to put up Wednesday Ng tents and call this heritage is an insult. Basically it is a waste of time even if you already in Chenonceaux.

We stopped here for a wine tasting and learned so much about the Loire Valley and the wines from the region. The vineyard and castle owner greeted us and conducted the tasting and we also had a delightful lunch with him and our group. Wine is available for an extremely reasonable price, and worth 5 times the price.

We saw this on a day tour which also took us to Chenonceau and Chambord. Lunch here was included in the tour as was wine tasting. There was no tour of the chateau,i only a look at an old pigeon tower with a movable ladder the owner had restored. The owner greeted us and was friendly and personable and the food was okay. Apart from the sparkling champagne like wine I found all the others unpleasant. I bought a half bottle but I found it had an undertaste I didn't like and I threw it out. Obviously taste in wine is personal, but I personally don't recommend it. The 3 chateau day tour was very good despite this chateau, and it was okay as a stop for lunch.

In the summer of 2011 we just happened to be driving along the main road and saw the signs pointing to Chateau de Nitray. On the spur of the moment we turned round , parked up and went in to visit. It was so good we visited again this summer (2013).
We were given a warm welcome. Entrance is now 5€ per adult. That includes a short film about barrel making (all in french but you soon understand the gist of it and have to do it!). Then you are free to roam the grounds and outbuildings, accompanied by a detailed handbook in your respective language.Visiting the pigeon house, wine vats, rose garden, etc.
The courtyard has lots of bicycles free to borrow to cycle in the grounds and around the estate. Once you have exhausted yourselves, you are encouraged to enjoy the wine tasting. Taking a seat at a table 6-9 bottles are placed in front of you with a dish of nibbles. You are under no pressure to buy wine and each time we visited, although we have purchased, we have felt that we could leave if we wanted to without buying.
All in all its a relaxing experience...although make sure you take the cycle ride before you taste the wine and do remember in most cases one of you is driving! The only disappointment is that you cannot go into the chateau. It is a family home. However, they do entertain tour parties and it is a wedding venue as well. We loved it here, one minute driving along the road and the next cycling around the estate, so relaxing.
One other tip, continue on the road past the chateau entrance, not the main road, and it takes you down to the river and an old mill. Absolutely beautiful and good place to picnic.

Visiting Chateau de Nitray was truly a highlight to our trip. All I wanted to do when visiting the Loire Valley was to visit a vineyard and drink fine wine and meet the locals. It was day 3 of our 4 day trip and we still had yet to have that experience. It was by luck (and recommendation by our hotel owner) to come to Nitray.

When we arrived we were told that they were not open for tours (should have looked it up first), but that we could pay a small admission fee and do a self-guided tour of the grounds, but not inside as the owners reside there, and afterwards could sample some wine.

As we were finishing the tour and heading back for some wine samples, we noticed an open door with wine vats, so we peaked our heads inside. We were greeting by friendly Francois who invited us in and gave us a lesson about the wine and samples straight from the vats! He was so passionate about the wine making process and truly made the experience so much better.

After meeting with Francois, we sat at a table outside and sampled a few of their wines which were superb. We ended up bringing a bottle back to our hotel to enjoy that night. The vineyards are across from the Chateau which which took a quick walk through. This was such a pleasant visit, one that will be forever remembered.

What a charming house and park, typical for the region, and must see for any amateur of old estates.

This is a small family winery. The couple that ran it for their family were very friendly. We sampled 3 wines which were delicious. Then they served us a wonderful rustic French lunch which was made by the wife (sorry don't know her name) It was roasted chicken, roasted potatoes and roasted tomatoes. Everything was magnifique!!!! They also gave us delicious baguette bread and all the wine for lunch that we wanted. And a delicious apple tart for dessert.
