A medieval town with character! If you are in the area, make sure you do not miss this sweet little town that continues to live within historic setting. Short walk will take you through the past.
Don't forget to stop for a glass of wine or great meal in Hisa Marica. You can even sleep in it, in 500-years old building.

We spent 2 nights in this small medieval village. It was very beautiful and views across the wine country were exceptional. In the village, definitely seek out the olive oil bar or Oljčni bar and Tatiana. She does a really good olive oil tasting and one of the finest orange chocolate cakes. She was very helpful to us, even picking us up from nearby Dobrovo when we went for a wine tasting, even in the rain! AND gave us fresh figs and plums from her mother's garden. Besides such generosity, the olive oil tasting was quite educational and fun to just sit and chat with a local who's also a foodie. Definitely worth a check (and the building it's in also hosts exhibitions).

This little village was briefly mentioned in one of the leaflets we picked up. It's a beautiful place surrounded by vineyards. The town itself is grAdually being restored following a earthquake some years ago, however there are boards around the village giving explanations about different buildings and then and now pictures. We spent an afternoon here, plenty of photos to be had - make sure to visit the church there as very pretty. Easy parking and great friendly welcome from the pub owner too

The village of Smartno is a total gem. Located in the heart of Goriska Brda (a famous wine, cherry and olive oil region), it's a site you should definitely visit. A quaint village, full of history and offering treats for wine lovers and foodies. Stop in Gonjace's view tower for a bird's eye view of the village.

You'll love it when you visit. It small romantic village and you will definitly enjoy walking around. Combine you're trip with visit of one of the best local vinery (Movia) and try local food. In hotel San Martin you can try good food from local ingrediens. The view on the green hills is priceless.

Smartno is a beautiful walled village surrounded by the most glorious vineyards, rolling hills and scenery.

I visited, as it lies at the end of stage 31 of the Alpe Adria Trail. Worth a walk nearby is also the Smartno viewing Tower. You can see the Julian Alps on one side and the Adriatic to the south.

Smartno itself is a car-free place with lovely stone cobbled corridoors, some fab bars and restaurants and some nice accomodation. The church is the focal point.

Its a great place to visit

Beautiful Smartno, we stayed at the lovely Hisa Marcia and hired bikes from tourist info. A brilliant day cycling around the area and dropping in on local wine producers to test their lovely wines. Electric bikes also available- highly recommended it’s very hilly.

We actually stayed on Italian side. The whole reason was to try orange wine (white wine, not wine from oranges 😛). When we planned the places to visit, we found olive oil testing in Oljčni bar hosted by Tatjana. We had most beautiful 2 hours of talking to her, and then proper tasting of olive oil. Tatjana gave us a lot tips and how-to.
Very interesting and tasteful event!
Walk through old charms of Smartno streets.
