Arrived as novices, left as ‘pros’… I now know a purple swamp hen when it’s shaking it’s snowy white tail feather! All thanks to the excellent guide who spots the action in seconds, relates it back in multiple languages and lets everyone have a look via binoculars (provided free) and her tripod telescope perfectly positioned at each hide. Middle of nowhere, right next to Lisbon! Lots of birds of many species, the visitor centre was good too. Everyone in our group was fun to be with, even though we were all strangers from different start points.

We visited the Evoa bird refuge in October and saw thousands of birds. In two hours we saw 39 different species, mostly water fowl but also raptors, owls, and others. We had a personal guide, transportation from Lisbon and a light lunch included in the ticket price. It was a great deal and a super experience for birders. Highly recommended.

A great place for birdwatching. I went on a tour in the electric car with Pedro as guide. he was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. It was really an excellent way to spend an hour and a half. I had to leave soon afterwards, although I would have liked to stay on for some unaccompanied birding

It is our fourth time and we love it. The guides are super nice and they explain everything about the best wildlife and birding sites. A lot of shelters to watch birds. Totally recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to EVOA. We had a guided visit, both to the exhibits and to the field. It was so absorbing we spent 4 hours instead of the planned 2:30, and time just flew.

The visit started with a movie about EVOA. I give high marks to the photography and the very clear narrative. Next, we were guided through the exhibition. Our very knowledgeable guide nicely complemented the charts, photos and text displayed! This was followed by a few "rules of the road" for the field visit and off we went.

It is quite an easy walk, as the path is totally flat. On a nice sunny day like today, wearing a hat is advisable, as are (any time) wearing good walking shoes, trousers and long sleeves. I should also have taken some water with me.

We made three stops at different lagoons and from the observation booths we were able to see and photograph a large variety of birds, some rarely seen (beginners luck?). This was in addition to many more seen during the walk. Again, our guide was invaluable, always ready with explanations and setting up the spotting scope she carried all along, helping us to easily distinguish the several species. We could also see tracks from various animals, and hear some bird calls. The richness and diversity of the fauna is amazing, and we were told it keeps changing throughout the year, so re-visiting should be nice.

EVOA is quite near Lisbon and easy to find. The path from the main road to EVOA is well marked. The price is fair, considering the amount of information, variety of birds that can be seen, the facilities, and the fact we could actually have spent the whole day, which we didn't know. It was a memorable afternoon, and I'd like to repeat it.

All coastal wetlands are important for migrating birds but Evoa is a feast of delights at the right time of the year. In November, the quantity and variety of species was wonderful and the weather perfect, by British standards (for November). Still little known, it would seem, by British birdwatchers because brochures etc are in Portuguese but beautifully illustrated. The staff could not be more helpful. (The birds could, at times, be a little more helpful, of course :o) It deserves to be world famous and one day it certainly will be.

My family and I spent a half day birdwatching in EVOA. Our guide Joao was very knowledgable and spoke good english and gave us great views of collared pranticole, purple swamphen and lots of other interesting birds. Overall we had a great day and will be back again. Note: If you have your own binoculours bring them as their binoculours aren't good.

Not easy to find, this wildlife centre is found by taking the A1 north and exiting at Vila Franca de Xira. It is found just after the bridge crossing the Tajus on the N10 . You then go down a sign posted dirt road for 10 km. On either sides of the track are fields which are well worth scanning for birds. The centre itself is a modern wooden building with a viewing window over the reserve as well as rooms with exhibitions of wildlife of the area. When we visited there was a webcam in a barn owl's nest with babies. There is a good cafe with a selection of drinks and snacks - try the home-made cake. The staff are very friendly and informative. Guided trips are available or you can walk round the lagoons where there are hides and a wide variety of birdlife. The entry fee is relatively steep: 12 euros adults, 7 euros children, family 30 euros but a great day out and highly recommended. Have been several times at different times of year and always something to see. Do try to bring binoculars and most birds seen at or around high tide.

EVOA sits at the Tagus Estuary which is the largest wetlands in Portugal and one of the 10 most important wetlands in Europe due to migratory water species. Large migrations happen at EVOA and 54% of Portugals wintering waders can be found here. It's a designated RAMSAR site. Don't miss a chance to tour the visitor center inside which has wonderful maps and exhibits in addition to info on conservation. The building exterior is quite something as well. While visiting there we had a wonderful tour with guide Pedro. We started out with a short film on the history of Tagus and the region, followed by info on banding birds for future research and documentation, important contributions by EVOA for conservation, a walk through the exhibits and finally a guided bird walk outside to several different bird blinds. Pedro is highly knowledgeable, speaks great English and has been a guide for 20 years or so. His passion for nature and birds is evident when he tells you of his bird banding adventures and recent forays into insect research and documentation. A great guide with a passion for preserving this important and beautiful natural area of Portugal. I throughly enjoyed my day here. If you love nature and birds EVOA makes for a great visit!

P.S EVOA takes a bit of navigating to get to. Especially if you don't have a car. From Lisbon you can the train to Vila Franca Xira (Which costs less than 5 Euros). From the train station a taxi will cost you 20 Euro one way out to EVOA. A big portion of that is down a long dirt road boarded by fields where lots of birds feed and fly. We saw Herons, Egrets, Gulls and Kestrels through the taxi window. Recommended to get a business card from the taxi that takes you there so you can call them for a pick up back to Xira or the staff at EVOA can call a cab for you.

We were in need of a hike. This is the perfect place. Many photographers were out and about. There were hundreds of ducks and birds all over the place. They have blinds/hides over the site. Perfect for a family outing. Bring your binoculars, because there is a lot to see. We even had lunch in their restaurant. They have awesome salads.
I loved this place.
