It is our fourth time and we love it. The guides are super nice and they explain everything about the best wildlife and birding sites. A lot of shelters to watch birds. Totally recommended!

We visited the Evoa bird refuge in October and saw thousands of birds. In two hours we saw 39 different species, mostly water fowl but also raptors, owls, and others. We had a personal guide, transportation from Lisbon and a light lunch included in the ticket price. It was a great deal and a super experience for birders. Highly recommended.

I could not rate this more highly. The installations were excellent, the staff amazing and the experience was very special. Sandra is a biologist working in the centre and she speaks English very well and had everything beautifully organised. We were a group of 20 members who enjoyed the EVOA programme of a guided visit of their interpretation centre, a birdwatching tour at EVOA lagoons (70,000 hectares of land) and to finalise a buffet with Lisbon sunset to the sound of chillout music. It was a real adventure in many different ways. Antonio, our guide, was very knowledgable and provided us with very interesting information. We were lucky to have had such good weather conditions. EVOA comprises of 70,000 hectares of land which was handed over to the government from the King in 1860. The Tagus Estuary is part of the major bird migratory route of the East Atlantic and is a strategic site for birds to stop over and refuel. In 1980 it was classified as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention , an International Treaty, adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar, to recognise wetlands as eco-systems as extremely important to the conservation of biodiversity and for the well-being of humanity. Apart from bird watching we also learnt about fascinating facts about birds from the EVOA information centre, … that adult birds stop feeding their children when they want them to become independent, more than 1% of the European Flamengo population stays in the Estuary between June and November…. Our tour was followed by a buffet supper watching the sunset and the flocks of birds flying overhead.

First visit for me and due to the 40 degree + temperatures we opted to pay a little extra to have a guided tour complete with transport in the centres buggy. The service, attention and knowledge were a joy to have. Despite the high temperatures loads of birds and we had the reserve to ourselves. Two of our party who live in the Lisbon area took out annual membership as a result of the experience. We opted to eat in the centre, air conditioned; and again the service couldn’t be faulted. Well worth a visit

All coastal wetlands are important for migrating birds but Evoa is a feast of delights at the right time of the year. In November, the quantity and variety of species was wonderful and the weather perfect, by British standards (for November). Still little known, it would seem, by British birdwatchers because brochures etc are in Portuguese but beautifully illustrated. The staff could not be more helpful. (The birds could, at times, be a little more helpful, of course :o) It deserves to be world famous and one day it certainly will be.
