I support the work of the National Trust but it seems strange that they charge to enter the grounds if you walk in from the car park but if you follow the signed Weald pathway you can enter for free!

On the grounds is on-lead only, but there is plenty of good tracks and bins for well, waste.. As for inside, as stated a, a tether point is outside of the actual castle.
