Fundy Tide Runners Whale Watching!

We went out with Fundy Tide Runners Whale Watching on Friday August 6, a day known for dense morning fog. What could have been a bad experience was only made better by the care this company took to maintain our safety.

We were a party of six: three adults and three children, aged 5 – 8. My first concern was obviously the children’s’ safety. FTRWW reassured me by answering my questions re: life jackets. The children would wear them throughout the trip, as well as a waterproof jacket and pants. The adults would have flotation suits (which we would also wear from the time we boarded the zodiac.) Other companies suggest life jackets will be worn as needed. As someone who has spent a considerable time on the water, that did not satisfy my need to know that the children would be safe in the event of an accident.

Because of the fog, the departure was delayed for an hour, in the hopes that we might have a chance to see more water life. We were notified by phone of the delay, rather than not learning of it until we arrived in St. Andrews.

The office is comfortable, very well located, spacious, and spotless with lots of space to don your safety equipment. Owner Melissa Ryan went over the safety gear, checking for fit. She instructed us on what we should do in the event of a need to enter the water. We then walked down to the zodiac at the end of the wharf, and were met by Captain Pat Mowatt, who instructed us on safely entering and sitting in the zodiac. He explained the weather conditions (still dense fog), and told us the plan for the excursion.

It was a calm day. We did see a minke whale, several porpoises, and a colony of seals. And we had a wonderful time, with the very knowledgeable captain who was able to educate us on Atlantic Salmon farms, the tides of Passamaquoddy, the many islands in the area, and the economy of the fishing industry.

I would highly recommend Fundy Tide Runners Whale Watching for your whale watching adventure in St. Andrews, NB.

Extremely friendly and organized. Visited in late June. Our trip had to be rescheduled due to weather, but the staff was quite organized and kept in contact with us regarding the outing. They were able to fit us in the next day. Saw 2 whales, harbour porpoises, seals and eagles. The captain was great- friendly and quite knowledgeable about the area. Would recommend going in August or September if you'd like to see more whales (as June is the start of the season).

. My second time whale watching in St. Andrews. The zodiac was a great experience. The skipper was a knowable and amusing guide and we got to see seals, porpoises and whales. I did not put on enough sunscreen!

It was a very enjoyable day as far as seeing whales. We saw a Minke, two Finn back whales and the highlight was two Humpback. Our Captain did his best to insure we had a great experience.
My only complaint is that the boat is very small and we were crammed into the seats. I spent half the trip half off and half on the seat. It was very uncomfortable when we hit the waves as really no place to hold on.
We were four adults, one adult sized teen and a youth.
Three people per seat is manageable, four is pushing it.

Protective suits were torn and ripped for at least three of the 12 participants; the RIB was far too crowded, the four passengers occupying the rear seat were so squashed together that they could not move, and the two of the four could not even raise their binoculars to look through them. None of the four could turn their heads, which meant that most of the whale sightings were obscured by the other passengers. Alec/Alex the driver had no microphone, so we could not hear his commentary above the roar of the engines. A poor layout for whale-watching, with 10 of the 12 passengers facing inwards, looking at each other. Very poor assistance given to disembarking passengers, with the first off being unable to climb over the side, due to the constricting suit and lack of adequate assistance.

Everyone was professional and friendly, our captain Greg went out of his way (and took us into extra time) to see the whales and was knowledgeable, the boat was as solid as a rock. All around great experience. Highly recommend it. We had stellar weather so that doesn’t hurt but it would be comfortable with the suits in just about any weather.

What a great trip out on The Bay with Capt. Pat and Fundy Tide Runners . A special shout out to Melissa who went above and beyond to make sure we could do the trip. Small Craft Advisories ( wind warnings) cancelled us on Wed., and again on Thurs. She was so good to get us out on Fri. =) My daughter and two grandchildren were thrilled. We saw all that Capt, Pat promised and he even extended the tour to track down an elusive Fin Back <3 I have done larger boats out of Brier Island (NS) and Triton (Nfld.), but this vessel was THE best .. fast.. got close to the action..FUN!!! It was a day we will all remember. I am so happy to have made the choice of Fundy Tide Runners, and would recommend them to all. =) We LOVED it !

We had a great weather day, and the boat was great as it’s speed let the captain go from sightings to sightings quickly. We saw lots of whales, porpoises, and seals. Excellent couple of hours

So let me start out by saying that ours was probably not the typical experience. We had a beautiful early fall day with calm seas that allowed us to go out further than usual, plus we were the last trip out of the day with a smaller group, none of which had to be back at any particular time. Plus we had a US border patrol vessel that was escorting a US warship into port pull alongside and tell us they had seen a couple of whale on their way in. So the stars really aligned for us! But let's go back to the beginning. We booked this on our own as part of a cruise which docked in St John's. We walked a block to the Budget Rental Car pickup (reserve early, get there as soon as you can!) and drove an hour to Fundy Bay. The drive was easy and pleasant with plenty to see and places to stop and get drinks/snacks. We stopped by Tim Horton's after the trip for some coffee, pastries and WiFi. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and fitted with a "Mustang" survival suit. One thing to note, you will have to walk upstairs to get to the office area which was a little hard on my bilateral knee replacement wife but she took her time. After that and a brief talk from Captain Jon was walked to the Zodiac boat and settled in. Due to the extreme tides in Fundy Bay the ramp to the boat was a little steep and you do have to step into the boat but my wife managed it without too much difficulty. The trip out was nice but it can get bumpy, even on a calm day. If you have back problems or are sensitive to being jostled, sit in the middle to back. Our first stop was to watch some seals on a small island and got to see a Bald Eagle looking for a late lunch. Next we went to an area known for Minke whales and did spot a couple feeding. After that Captain Jon decided to head out further to see if we could find the brass ring, Humpback whales! This is when we got the information about a pair being spotted and we headed out to the tip of Southern Wolf Nature Preserve. Jackpot! We were able to spend about 30 minutes watching Cork and Chevron feeding and playing with them even surfacing close enough to us where we were able to smell their breath from their blows! (Spoiler alert, it stinks!) Finally it was time to head back in but for us, this was the highlight of our vacation and well worth the time and effort.

Pros:
Smaller boat
Small groups
Faster to the area
More nimble
More fun!

Cons:
Smaller boat
Bounces more than a larger vessel
Harder to get into and out of

What a great day out on the Bay of Fundy. We got to see 3 types of whales. I've been lucky enough to see Humpbacks and Minke before, today we saw 2 Finback whales - WOW!! Our Captain, Greg, was fantastic, went above and beyond to get us our sightings.
I would highly recommend Fundy Tide Runners if you are in or near St. Andrews New Brunswick. They were professional, friendly and informative.
Super afternoon all around.
