About
Kicking Horse has attracted rave reviews for its awesome vertical, deep powder and spectacular terrain mix. With an express gondola accessing over 4314 ft (1315m) of vertical, you’re bound to ski and ride an impressive feat of terrain comparable to only that of heli-skiing. Coupled with summer activities such as mountain biking, Grizzly Bear Refuge, and alpine sightseeing, this is a place where the stories are almost too tall to believe.

We stayed in Aspen #50 with Lush Accommodations and had an incredible view of the valley and more than 40 peaks. The accommodation was clean and fully furnished. Perhaps too much furniture as the apartment was cosy but difficult to move around in due to size of furnishings. The bedrooms are small and just enough space for one suitcase. The one bathroom was an ok size but things did a bit crowded with three people. Hot tub was a nice addition for sunsets.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at the apartment but found the area to be lacking in any life what so ever. The entire base village of the ski lift is off season and deserted.
Nothing is open except for the general store which closes at 6pm. Kicking horse is around 15km away from town so making a dinner run into town isn't a given. Bring everything you need because there are no restaurants open at Kicking horse past 4pm and the two spots that opened for lunch were very underwhelming. Our time in Revelstoke felt like a big city compared to Kicking Horse which was super deserted.
Lastly, IF YOU HAVE A DOG, AVOID Golden as there is a silly law that doesn't allow dogs anywhere near a restaurant in Golden . Never felt so dog unfriendly anywhere else in the world to this degree. NO dogs on mountain trails, lifts, decks, or really anywhere.

Don't come here in September this place is a ghost town on top of the hill with nothing open. They must reduce the capacity of the hotel to make it seem at capacity when booking. Fair enough in the off season, but activities centre, not open, in house general store, not open, gondolas, not operating for hiking or Mt bikes. Ghost town, you'll have to go to town for food or cook on a camp stove on the patio

We took this gondola rather than the others available in the Rockies on advice from our guidebook and were not disappointed. The views are incredible. It wasn't busy at all, lots of walks ar the top. We saw the grizzly bear as we went up which was a bonus but you can go to a talk about Boo the bear. The little shops and bars at the resort near tge accommodation are also brilliant.

We did the bear refuge on the middle of the mountain and met Boo the Bear.
He is a 20 year old male grizzly and he is huge! He’s behind an electric fence but he gets very close. Kat and the other care takers are amazing and have so much information about him and bears in general. We were lucky enough to do the private family tour in the morning and I’ll never forget it.

You have amazing views from the top, take your hiking equipment with you, it is not an easy path. But worth to do it.

We enjoyed our ride in the gondola to the top of the mountain. We spent time at the top enjoying the scenery and watching the mountain bikers start their downhill journey. HUGE shoutout to CHARLES. We left a backpack when we got off the gondola and when we returned Charles retrieved it for us even though he was leaving for the day. Great employee!

After a day of sunshine & white water rafting the Kicking Horse river in +25C temps, I was very disappointed to discover there is no air conditioning in any of rooms in any of the three lodges. This missing amenity was never disclosed or mentioned at the time of booking or at check-in. Our room was a top floor loft unit facing west and upon entering it, the room temperature was near +30, with the loft even higher. When I called the front desk to inquire about the AC, I was told this is a winter resort so there isn't any AC. It was also suggested we open the window and the door to the balcony when the sun set at approx. 10PM. Having eaten outside at the resort early, we had experienced swarms of mosquitos and little black flies, none of which we wanted in our room. Our only reprieves were 2 floor fans and 2 small ceiling fans. Needless to say, none of us had more than a few hours sleep. Interesting note; the lobby and hallways are air conditioned. The high rate charged for this room should have provided us with very comfortable accommodations and a good night's sleep. Extremely disappointed and we will not return.

This place has so much potential but needs to fix some issues.
1. The lift layout here is insanely inadequate. I kind of knew this before arriving but was still surprised in person at how bad it is. There are 4 lifts total but 2 of those are for beginners. So there are really 2 lifts. However one of those, the Stairway to Heaven chair, isn't worth lapping because it only covers a short diagonal fall line on easy-ish terrain. So that leaves one lappable lift, which is the gondola. However, the lineup for this lift is around 30 minutes for most of the day because it's essentially the only one. In addition to all this, the hike-to terrain is extensive but soooo far away and lots of uphill. Maybe if I had a season pass I would spend the hours it would take to get in and out of these other bowls, but with only a single day I kept skiing the same quickly accessible lines to maximize my ticket value. This kind of defeats the reputation as an expert's paradise b/c you don't have time to get to most of it.
2. There's no cafeteria dining, only restaurants? I've never seen this before. When I'm skiing sometimes I just want to dry off and rest in the corner with a Red Bull and not be bothered with the formality of a menu and waiter. It was so inconvenient.
3. I went to the Black Diamond Cafe at the base. This place had great food and service, but is so small for the number of people at the resort that you couldn't get a table! You're standing there with food in your hands and a bunch of groups are sitting at tables talking not eating or drinking anything just hanging out, and you can just keep waiting forever while they relax. Really selfish. I ended up having to eat outside cold and wet at a picnic table.
4. The Covid-19 policies here are strictly enforced, which was interesting because only an hour away at Lake Louise it's much more relaxed. You can immediately see that policies are decided more by local politics than science. To pick up the ticket I had already paid for I had to show my Passport, vaccination card, and ArriveCAN app receipt. This is a lot to carry around at a place that doesn't allow backpacks to be worn on lifts.

Planning a trip for early May 2020. Is Boo usually out for viewing at the refuge this time of year? Is this considered off-season? What hours would the refuge and lifts be operating?
Hey there. Early May is considered off-season on our resort. We close for winter mid-April and usually don't open for summer operations until closer to the end of May.
If you're hoping to visit Boo, you'll need to visit during our summer operations. Early May would be too early for that, unfortunately! We'd love to have you visit - perhaps looking at late May or early June would be feasible on your end? We'll be open for summer operations then.

Looking to visit in feb w two teens. Looking for the following.....kitchen, house or condo, ski on/ski off, outdoor pool/hot tub. Basically everything we found at revelstoke last year. Have it at Kicking Horse?
Hi there. There are a variety of accommodation options available at our resort!
If you're interested in condos that sit right at the base of the resort near the gondola, check out Kicking Horse Lodging's website, which manages Glacier, Mountaineer, and Palliser Lodge.
Like Diana mentioned, there is a bevy of accommodation options available via Airbnb, where you can rent townhouses and single-family homes that are located on resort.
Both options above would offer ski-in/ski-out access and the amenities you're after!

Is there really free overnight RV parking at Kicking Horse Resort, BC?
Our family (2 adults + 2 children) will be visiting Kicking Horse for a wedding. Is it possible to park our truck and 23 ft. Trailer for 2 or 3 nights during the wedding activities?
Thank you.

Any suggestion on any kind of discovery guided tour at Kicking horse?
Emile L
Golden, Canada1 contribution
Best tour is the Big Mountain Clinics, a guide will show you around the mountain all day, show you where the good snow is & secret stashes. You also skip the lift lines all day! This is available to purchase online or at Winter Sport School Desk. There is also free mountain tours, shorter and more basic, but gives you a general overview of the mountain. They start daily at 10AM at the big trail map sign, located next to the Gondola Base.

Any difficulties during the Ascension hike? Total time hiking? How would you rate the difficulty? enough

The Ascension Route is one of the Via Ferrata routes at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.
I did not find it difficult, I’m reasonably fit and flexible, it’s exhilarating!!! It’s a full 3 hours.

Anyone know of a better deal on Kicking Horse lift tickets than direct on their web site or Liftopia?
Thanks!

Hi Everyone- 6 of us are staying near Kicking Horse end of June, and would like to ride the gondola and do lunch at Eagles Eye restaurant on the 25th June. Is it likely to be so busy that we need to book the gondola tickets and lunch reservations in advance? Thanks

I agree. I don't know how busy it will be but as you know your plans it's better to get it booked in. We had to make a reservation and the mountain itself wasn't that busy when we went.

With a group that size it would be best to contact Paul Deutsch. He oporates a school bus for such occasions and would be only of the only options that would be able to pick up & transport all of your group at once.
You can reach him at bar@rockwatergrill. com
