BaldFace is Epic. This was my first time there. There is not one negative thing I can say about this 3 day experience other than I wish it was longer! I was 1 of 2 girls on the trip along with 46 guys. Pretty much half boards and half skiers. Our Cat carried twelve of us guests, plus Terry our Guide, Wexie our Tail Guide, and Joel our Cat driver. With their vast knowledge of the Kootenays, they took us to the most insane untouched, steep, deep and heavenly terrain. Not one run we rode had a single track on it in all 3 days of riding. Everywhere you looked was untouched fresh powder. I’m was magical!
The lodge and accommodation were absolutely mountain beautiful. They offer chalets or rooms in the lodge. The beds were comfy, the rooms were cozy and the views were to die for.
The food was exquisite. Hearty and delicious breakfasts, pack your own bag lunches, and fabulous gourmet dinners and desserts.
The lodge staff was so friendly and worked so hard. There were laid back, warm, helpful and friendly vibes in the air at all times and everything was orchestrated and presented so perfectly through out the trip.
If you have the opportunity to go to BaldFace, GO, you won’t regret it. This was by far the best skiing experience of my life, so far.
Can’t wait to see ya’ll next year. SFD!

If I could leave 10 Stars I would. This is by far the best snow-cat lodge in North America if not the world! the Staff is amazing, the Terrian is next level, the Food is 5-star and the whole vibe /atmosphere of the lodge is nothing but Cool!
When it comes to the guides and mountain safety staff, they take it very serious and are extremely knowledgeable ( I have been to most places in the world for comparison AK, Chile, UT, WY, Japan, NZ, etc). The only advice is start now trying to get a spot, they sell out way in advance .

From start to finish, Baldface is the ultimate ski trip.

First, the skiing. Every single run is the best run of your life. Waist deep at worst, big open bowls, plenty of cliffs for those so inclined, amazing glades, everything you want and as big as you want to go while still being accessible for everyday powder enthusiast. One day we took one run that was icy and sunbaked and the guides were so apologetic and felt so bad. I found this amusing, but it speaks for how good every run normally is. The guides were also supremely professional and made us feel very safe from start to finish. They hadn't even gotten much new snow recently when we visited, so I imagine at times it's even deeper..which is frankly hard to imagine. I've skied all over and this is as good as it gets.

The experience is top notch when you're not skiing too. Fabulous food, great wines and beer, and a really fun house party atmosphere of laid back folks having fun every night. They might even have a big block of ice specially cut for taking shots through late at night...though that detail is slightly fuzzy. The accommodations were great too, very comfortable beds in our private chalet just a 30 second walk from the main lodge.

It's not particularly easy to get to, but most places this good aren't. Go as soon as you can, it's that good.

Lost my bucket list opportunity. They canceled my trip a little over a week before I was scheduled. They offered me to come a week early… Who can change an international trip with that short of notice? For my inconvenience they offered me 10% off, thanks but that doesn’t match up with the inconvenience of changing an entire trip. Also, they didn’t help me connect with anyone else that could replace the trip. When I researched other companies there were no other operators in the area with availability or a similar trip. Not only did they cancel but they did it so late I had no other opportunities. To throw salt on the wound, it’s going to be a powder day when I was scheduled with them… I would not recommend this company as you cannot count on them to follow through.

** for clarity, the above review is for Baldface Valhalla (day operation) not Baldface Lodge (multi-day) ** Hi Alex, we're so sorry that you were not able to experience your day trip at Valhalla this year and understand your disappointment. Cancellations are extremely rare: Your trip was scheduled for March 31st and when it comes to shredding in the shoulder season, it can be a bit hit and miss. Due to an earlier-than-normal spring, the compromised snow conditions and the resulting lack of guests on your trip resulted in this unusual and unexpected cancellation. We do hope that the full refund we provided you at the time of cancellation, gives you the opportunity to experience cat skiing another time and enables you to tick it off your bucket list! Thanks for sharing your perspective — we have taken this into consideration and moving forward, we will certainly ensure that our end-of-season guests better understand the situation when booking springtime trips.

The Baldface reputation of arrogance proceeds them. I went to Baldface with a co-ed group of boarders and skiers this year. And, exactly what people say about this place happened to us, the staffs “ski snobbish” attitude ruined our trip. Our guide was a salty older ski snob named Terry. He was vocally and visually frustrated with some people in our group because not everyone could ski as well as him. We booked the entire cat, and no one else that was paying for the trip minded obviously, as we are all friends. Our weaker skiers/boarders can ski anything in bounds. They simply needed a few pointers on how to navigate the steep powder in the trees. But instead of help, they got scolded and embarrassed. Then when we confronted his superiors, they were equally arrogant about the situation.
If you do make the mistake of going to Baldface, make sure you don’t get Terry as a guide.

This is the place to go for serious powder. Just got back from a 4 day trip. Huge variety of terrain - open bowls, trees, steeps, logging clear cuts. Fresh tracks every run all 4 days & no shortage of terrain for the next groups to set their own 1st tracks. This place caters to serious powder skiers / boarders with experience in the steep & deep. Not the place to go for the inexperienced (imho) but it rocks if you know what you are doing. 12 persons per cat + lead guide / tail guide. 3 cats running, 36 guests at any time - gives you a good opportunity to meet new people during your visit.

Our snowcat has a Ipod compatible stereo in it - bring your pod & a good play list to keep the cat rocking between runs.

The lodge is in the back-country, near the top of their terrain. Usually only a couple minutes to your 1st run of the day - no long commutes + last run is also usually close to the lodge - again no long commutes - just skiing / boarding. Fly in on a heli if the weather is good - always a blast flying in the heli.

The vibe is much different than heli-ski ops I have been to - younger, more snowboard oriented. Bar in the lodge gets fairly rowdy at night, depending on who is there.

Staff are super-friendly all the way around - guides, cat drivers, bar tenders, etc. Jeff, the owner, was also there on transfer days - super nice guy, really makes all his guests feel welcome. In talking with him, he gets why people come to Baldface - the steep & deep - which seems to be the whole reason he is in the business - his own passion for the steep & deep.

Food is good but not the focus of the trip. Continental breakfasts, lunches are a variety of sandwiches & snacks, which you eat in the cast between runs (no down time, which is appreciated ). Dinners are 3 course (salad, main, dessert) with a different meat each night for the main.

The lodging was equal to the old college fraternity days. For this type of price, customers should experience a little nicer accommodations. The skiing wasn’t bad. But there are many great skiing options in the area with more to offer.

They have the experience nailed.

You're looking at this because you want to ride/ski - so that first. Our guides and cat-driver were the perfect blend of fun and competent (fun when all's well, but right beneath the surface, very competent about dangers and keeping an eye on everyone). The terrain was steep and varied - Wide open bowls, tight trees, cliffs, whoopties. All untracked powder. We caught a stretch of bluebird days that were cold and clear. As a result, the snow was stable and as light as I've experienced in the Rockies (UT/CO). The terrain, particularly the trees, were great for riding but seemed a bit more challenging for skiers.

The lodge has a reputation as catering to riders (one of the reasons we choose it). We didn't have a lot of leg-burning traverses and the cat roads were all close to the end of the hill, so post-holing to the road was never necessary. We were in the cat from about 8:30 to 3pm. and were getting around +/-10,000 feet per day on average. The cat ride was efficient with as little time wasted launching and loading as needed. The cats carry 12 guests plus a lead and tail guide. At first, that seemed like a lot of people, but even going dead last, we had no problem finding untracked, awesome lines all the way down.

The food was fantastic. Hearty breakfasts, great pack lunches to eat on the cats and wonderful dinners. They have a comfortable bar area with a pool table, ping pong and wood burning stove. Good local beer selection. They also have a corner full of guitars to plink about on.

Staff was great. They work well as a team and do a great job making sure everyone feels at home. They all (all!) give off a really positive vibe and it makes the whole experience great. We did not come across a single person there who wasn't smiling and willing to help out with whatever you needed.

They offer ski and snowboard rentals. They had a LOT of boards to try - as in hundreds. Skis were a little more limited. You'll need your own boots.

One thing you pick up on pretty quickly is that they have a dedicated following of folks who return every year. Over 1/2 of the folks who arrived on our 3-day trip were returners. That says a lot to me.

Yes, it's expensive but it's a trip of a lifetime. You should do this.

I had an incredible time at Baldface. These folks sure work hard and know how to help you have a good time. The food was great, the terrain was the best I've ever imagined and I got to ride it with really really nice guides. No kooky dictator style guiding, they let us jump rocks and pointed out all the sweet lines. It was great. The lodge is nice but, still needs to be completed. It's okay now, but when they get it done it will be incredible.

Hoghly reccomended!
