Great stop on your way to or from Port Alberni or Tofino. Nice pathways (a bit mucky when it has rained as it doesn't dry out but you can make your way around it). Fascinating to see the large trees. Good info to read along the way.

Stopped in at Cathedral Grove both coming and going from Tofino. Absolutely amazing trees...and too bad more of them have not been left to enjoy. Some of them are absolutely giants, and ancient, like one 800 years old. Not to be missed for sure.
Well kept paths that loop around and don't take long to walk.

This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful places on earth, especially if it's snowing. Had one of the most magical enchanting experiences here. A must-see! Thank you universe for providing such beauty!

Wow!
Amazing to see first hand the size of these trees, and feel the old growth forest air.
Don't just drive by, take a walk and enjoy.

This boardwalked path through the Cathedral Grove Park is a safe way to see a variety of giant trees that grow in our rainforest. There are areas to pause and take pictures of these wonders of nature. There is a place to park and walk on both sides of the highway, so there is no need to cross the busy highway at all. "This is a must-see".

The MacMillian provincial park. Located on highway 4 on the way to Port Alberni. This area has two trails. Depending on time and how quick you walk. It can take about 20 to 30 minutes to walk a trail. It is amazing to see the old growth trees. This is a very popular stop. In the summer there are so many cars and motor homes parked. They can be parked along the highway. As you are walking through the trees, be prepared as it is cooler in temperature. They are currently building new washrooms. So parking is even more limited.

Ups:
-Beautiful walk through old cedar and fir trees.
-Lots of informative signs along the way; very well-maintained; and easy walking paths for all ages (watch out for roots, though).
-We caught it on a sunny day, which was ideal.
-Close to Parksville (under a 30 min drive)
Downs:
-Outhouse washrooms were swarming with flies and mosquitoes - “go” before you go!
-Can be quite busy.

great place to visit and remember to look up. Try to imagine the amount of leaves/needles up there . Interesting to also try and figure out how old the forest is. Careful of the traffic and people on vacation tend to look at the scenery a lot.

It's quite an experience to walk through the trails of MacMillan Provincial Park, situated between Nanaimo and Port Alberni. The rainforest is so dense with life, huge trees, moss covering practically everything else, it can be a bit overwhelming. But it is indeed a very worthwhile stop. When we were there in April, it was not terribly busy, and we found parking okay. During the summer months, however, I can imagine that it might be a bit of challenge, as there didn't seem to be large parking lots anywhere. We would suggest, therefore, if you're counting on walking these magnificent trails, to head there a bit early, and not leave it to "rush hour." But explore this place if you can! Caution: this IS a rainforest, so it rains a lot here - trails can get wet and muddy! Wear appropriate shoes.

Take the Island Hwy north to Parksville area then take the Alberni Hwy. Follow it until you reach the park. Easy.
How long does it take to hike both loops (north and south) ? Thank you!

We were there with our 5 year old grandson, who wanted to look in every nook and cranny. We did the South side first, in my opinion more interesting, and the North side after. I think we were there for about 3 hours, all in all a pleasant way to spend some time with Mother Nature.
I hope this helps.
