I'm a senior and do a lot of walking but not much cycling (so far this year I've only been out once!) . So tackling the Lochside Trail was scary- it shouldn't have been. Perfectly flat (well there were a couple of very easy slopes). With lots of fun photos stops, food and drink. About a 1/4 of it is in the open and so on a hot and sunny day can be tough but there is a breeze off the ocean that is cooling. And the rest of the way it is like cycling through a wooded forest - magnificent. Even small children could do portions of it - it is that easy. One way takes 2-3 hours.

We took the ferry from Anacortes, WA to Sydney, BC with our bikes and easily found the trail on the nearby round-about. The trail is well marked but you can lose track of the trail at a couple spots. In about three locations look diagonally across the intersection to locate the continuation... we lost the trail temporarily a couple times..... Other than that... this is a FANTASTIC trail which takes you through rural farms, suburban neighborhoods right into the urban core of Victoria near the "BLUE" bridge... which in May of 2015 was under construction for a replacement. Our hotel was right behind the Empress on the harbor and the mileage by my bike odometer was 18 miles (US). There are no steep hills and my 64 year old legs did just fine. It took us just under 2 hours to ride into town with a couple backtracks. You really have to ride this trail.... In 1980 I rode on the shoulder of the highway and it was a bad ride.,,,,, this ride is FANTASTIC. Also, they have tool stations along the way and at least one location with a portable toilet... which is handy.

The Lochside trail links the ferry terminal to Victoria via a bike trail. Very well marked bike route that is a mixture of a dedicated path (gravel and paved), quiet side streets and country roads. Food and washrooms are aling the 30 km route.

Yes this is a beautiful trail but has become overrun with rude bikers that DO NOT SHARE THE TRAIL with walkers! They ride 2 and 3 abreast and rarely use a bell or verbal caution that they are approaching a walker from the rear. I have tried walking against the traffic so I could see what was coming but that ended when a biker verbally abusing me for doing so. Just walking alone is bad enough, but trying to walk with a dog is a nightmare! This used to my favourite place to walk my dog but it's unsafe now.

Where can you experience a beautiful trail partially newly done with pavers for scooters, walkers runners etc.
It's along side the beautiful Salish Sea. Marina, beach, shell hunting, kayaking, as you walk. Walk past the USA/Canada Sidney/Anacortez Ferry, Picnic areas and handy benches, beautiful flowers you experience a breathtaking scenic walk.
Smell the sea air, fill your lungs wth the fresh sea air!
Walk down to Tulista Park, picnic, Art Gallery, children's playground.
There is so much to enjoy.
The best part is your getting exercise, moving and the beauty of this Regional Trail experience that goes fr miles and eventually meets the Galloping Goose Trail.
You will experience what ever level of exercise you want and enjoy.

If you're looking for an easy hour (or so) ride that takes you past villages, seaside homes, restaurants, and forested lanes then the Lochside Trail is for you. It's well marked and (a bonus) has several rest stops that provide water and maps. My favourite rest stop is at Mt. Newton Xrd next to the McDonald's. The trail is not usually too crowded and is paved most of the way.

The bike ride was fantastic! 46 km in total, but very easy, no ups and downs, fun to ride. The scenery around distracts from biking, you always look around whether it's a farm with funny piggies, blackberry bushes, fields and distant mountains. Once in Sidney, we enjoyed the most relaxing atmosphere: the views are fantastic, the food in local restaurants is delicious, live music enhances the mood. We loved it!

The Lochside trail goes from the BC ferry terminal at Swartze Bay to join the Galloping Goose trail in Victoria. Mostly following an abandoned rail line, it is essentially level the entire way. Great cycling or walking. Because it crosses numerous roads you can join it ant many places and walk or ride as big a section as you want. Even in the urban areas it is mostly quiet and away from urban scenery, though it does follow some residential streets occasionally. One section crosses a lake on a low trestle, another is in open farmland, other places are wooded lanes. Some gravel, other places blacktop, so could be used by wheelchairs.

Nice ride, good exercise and fun Sunday. Rode to Sidney and had lunch. Rode back and we both felt great. Easy ride, almost flat the whole way.

For the 8th time I competed the Lochside Trail last week. We have been doing this bike ride almost annually as a family and oftentimes with other families along. The ride is suitable for anyone (kids or aged) that is capable of sustained cycling for the distance 30km or so one way. On this last ride, my daughter who is age 9, did it for the first time on her own bike without much difficulty and we returned the next day cycling the same route. This time, it took us about 3 hours each way, but in the past we have taken up to 5 hours, not because of distance or difficulty, but because there are many enjoyable stops along the route. My two boys did the trip when they were 7 years old - BTW they are teens now and always look forward to the ride. We now always do the trip over two (or more) days, to prolong the enjoyment and to give us more time to explore Victoria upon arrival. I have also done the ride (to Victoria and back to the ferry) in one day riding with fit adults - about 70 km - not difficult. The one part of the trip that I may offer caution to families with self-propelled kids is the 5 to 7 km of the route that is on a roadway shoulder. This section is about 7 km from the ferry and parallels Lochside Drive. Along this stretch I have found myself being nervous and protective of the lesser-experienced riders of them doing something that would take them into traffic. The rest of the route is entirely separated from cars or on very tranquil back roads. Our entire family loves the ride and it is one of the highlights of the year along with the destination of Victoria, such a charming city.
