Great place to visit with kids. A place to return to on a regular basis. Good variety. There will be more visitors with the covid restrictions being lifted.

Excellent Recreation of a Rural Village in 1914
Aug 2019
Doon Heritage Village is a recreation of a rural Ontario village in 1914, including buildings and their furnishings or equipment, and grounds. Many buildings have docents dressed in period attire who tell you about the buildings and answer questions. Everything is in restored condition, and you are welcome to explore the buildings and grounds all you want. They make it easy for you to imagine what life would have been like in those days. Highly recommendable for school groups. To find it you must first find the Waterloo Region Museum; you park there and enter the museum building; the price of admission includes both the museum and the village. Food is available in the museum building, so you don't have to worry about leaving in order to get lunch. There is so much to see and learn here that we spent an entire day in the museum and a second entire day in the village.

Disappointing - not as good as Westfield!

We came specifically to explore the old Anne of Green Gables sites from the 1985 movie and were disappointed at the lack of knowledge by all the staff about the locations, as well as the attitude of a number of the staff. The three men in the blacksmithing room clearly thought our presence an intrusion on their conversation and we received a blank faced recitation of a couple of facts then silence that suggested we leave. Not great and definitely not worth the entrance fee.

Many guides are from local farming families.

That would have been another artificial "pioneer village", if not for folks who work there. Most of them are local (as in "5 generations in the area"), and a lot of them are coming from farms themselves. so they're able to explain the local farming life in very good details.

Wonderful step back in time

Great little historic village depicting life in the early 1900’s!

Fans of the original Anne of Green Gables will TOTALLY recognize the townscape from the movie! I had no idea it was filmed here, but I’m a big fan...so it was a little strange to have such a familiar feeling for a place I had never physically been to!

Very nicely presented outdoor museum

Great to see the people dressed up in historical costumes in the various buildings and hear them tell about the history of the mennonites, how a grocery store was run, etc. The blacksmith was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic!

A wonderful trip back in time

My wife and I were travelling through the Kitchener/Waterloo area for the weekend and we found this museum online and wanted to check it out. When we arrived, the staff greeted us enthusiastically and the $11 entry fee was incredibly affordable. We decided to take the 'Doon Heritage Village' tour before we went to the museum. My wife and I have been to many of these villages with live tour guides in costume, playing a role and we have never experienced these young students/adults being so enthusiastic about their jobs. Every single employee did their job 100% and made us more interested in what they were saying. I can't say enough about these young men and women doing their job. My wife and I didn't think it could get better after going through the village until we went to the Waterloo Regional Museum. I grew up in Toronto and I am embarrassed that Toronto does not have a historical museum about the history and development and celebration of Toronto that this museum has. It was fascinating, engaging and interactive. Every city, county, region should look at this museum to understand how to celebrate their history. The young students/volunteers were very knowledgeable and actually interested in what they were doing. That made our visit even more enjoyable.

Your museum, their managers and their employees that do the really tough work when they bake bread and light ovens in 35 degree weather MUST be commended for their ability to make any visitor feel welcome and informed about the history of this extremely interesting region.

If you are in the area, do not pass this up.

There is a lot to this museum including exhibits indoor and outdoor. An excellent history movie is shown in a state of the art theatre.

A very enjoyable visit, like a time machine.

This is a recreation of a small village as it would have been in 1914.
There is a general store, blacksmith and other shops and houses.
The staff are in period dress and are very knowledgeable and extremely friendly.
Allow yourself plenty time to do it full justice and don't miss the Mennonite farmhouse which is magnificent.
There is also a great indoor museum adjacent which gives an insight into Canadian life including information on the First Nation and life before Europeans arrived.
I would regard this museum as a "must see" for locals and visitors alike.
